Isaiah 23

An Oracle Concerning Tyre and Sidon

1The loracle concerning mTyre.

Wail, O nships of Tarshish,
for Tyre is laid waste, owithout house or harbor!
From pthe land of Cyprus
Hebrew Kittim; also verse 12

it is revealed to them.
2Be still, O inhabitants of the coast;
the merchants of rSidon, who cross the sea, have filled you.
3And on many waters
your revenue was the grain of Shihor,
the harvest of the Nile;
you were sthe merchant of the nations.
4Be ashamed, O tSidon, for the sea has spoken,
the stronghold of the sea, saying:
“I have neither labored nor given birth,
I have neither reared young men
nor brought up young women.”
5When the report comes to Egypt,
they will be in anguish
Hebrew  they will have labor pains
over the report about Tyre.
6 vCross over to Tarshish;
wail, O inhabitants of the coast!
7Is this your exultant city
wwhose origin is from days of old,
whose feet carried her
to settle far away?
8Who has purposed this
against Tyre, the bestower of crowns,
whose merchants were princes,
whose traders were the honored of the earth?
9The Lord of hosts has purposed it,
xto defile the pompous pride of all glory,
The Hebrew words for  glory and  hosts sound alike

to dishonor all the honored of the earth.
10Cross over your land like the Nile,
O daughter of Tarshish;
there is no restraint anymore.
11 zHe has stretched out his hand over the sea;
he has shaken the kingdoms;
the Lord has given command concerning Canaan
to destroy its strongholds.
12And he said:
“You will no more exult,
O oppressed virgin daughter of aaSidon;
arise, abcross over to acCyprus,
even there you will have no rest.”
13Behold the land of adthe Chaldeans! This is the people that was not;
Or  that has become nothing
Assyria destined it for wild beasts. They erected aftheir siege towers, they stripped her palaces bare, they made her a ruin.

14 agWail, O ships of Tarshish,
for your stronghold is laid waste.
15In that day Tyre will be forgotten for ahseventy years, like the days
Or lifetime
of one king. At the end of ajseventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute:

16 Take a harp;
go about the city,
O forgotten prostitute!
Make sweet melody;
sing many songs,
that you may be remembered.”
17At the end of akseventy years, the Lord will visit Tyre, and she will return to her wages and alwill prostitute herself with all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth. 18Her merchandise and her wages will be holy to the Lord. It will not be stored or hoarded, but her merchandise will supply abundant food and fine clothing for those who dwell before the Lord.

Ezekiel 26

Prophecy Against Tyre

1 amIn the eleventh year, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 2 anSon of man, because aoTyre said concerning Jerusalem, apAha, the gate of the peoples is broken; it has swung open to me. I shall be replenished, now that she is laid waste,’ 3therefore thus says the Lord God: aqBehold, I am against you, O Tyre, and will bring up armany nations against you, asas the sea brings up its waves. 4They shall destroy the walls of Tyre and break down her towers, and I will scrape her soil from her and atmake her a bare rock. 5She aushall be in the midst of the sea a place for the spreading of nets, avfor I have spoken, declares the Lord God. And she shall become plunder for the nations, 6and her daughters on the mainland shall be killed by the sword. awThen they will know that I am the Lord.

7For thus says the Lord God: axBehold, I will bring against Tyre ayfrom the north Nebuchadnezzar
Hebrew Nebuchadrezzar; so throughout Ezekiel
king of Babylon, baking of kings, with horses and chariots, and with horsemen and a host of many soldiers.
8He will kill with the sword bbyour daughters on the mainland. bcHe will set up a siege wall against you and throw up a mound against you, and raise bda roof of shields against you. 9 beHe will direct the shock of his battering rams against your walls, and with his axes he will break down your towers. 10His horses will be so many that their dust will cover you. Your walls will shake at the noise of the horsemen and wagons and chariots, when he enters your gates as men enter a city that has been breached. 11With the hoofs of his horses he will trample all your streets. He will kill your people with the sword, and your mighty pillars will fall to the ground. 12They will plunder bfyour riches and loot bgyour merchandise. They will break down your walls and destroy your pleasant houses. Your stones and timber and bhsoil they will cast into the midst of the waters. 13 biAnd I will stop the music of your songs, and bjthe sound of your lyres shall be heard no more. 14 bkI will make you a bare rock. blYou shall be a place for the spreading of nets. You shall never be rebuilt, bmfor I am the Lord; I have spoken, declares the Lord God.

15Thus says the Lord God to Tyre: Will not bnthe coastlands shake at the sound of your fall, bowhen the wounded groan, when slaughter is made in your midst? 16Then all bpthe princes of the sea will step down from their thrones and bqremove their robes and strip off their embroidered garments. They will clothe themselves with trembling; brthey will sit on the ground and bstremble every moment and btbe appalled at you. 17And they will buraise a lamentation over you and say to you,

“‘How you have perished,
you who were inhabited from the seas,
O city renowned,
bvwho was mighty on the sea;
she and her inhabitants bwimposed their terror
on all her inhabitants!
18Now the coastlands tremble
on the day of your fall,
and the coastlands that are on the sea
are dismayed at your passing.’
19For thus says the Lord God: When I make you a city laid waste, like the cities that are not inhabited, bxwhen I bring up the deep over you, and the great waters cover you, 20then byI will make you go down with those who go down to the pit, to the people of old, and I will make you to dwell in the world below, among ruins from of old, bzwith those who go down to the pit, so that you will not be inhabited; but I will set beauty cain the land of the living. 21I will bring you cbto a dreadful end, and you shall be no more. ccThough you be sought for, you will never be found again, declares the Lord God.”

Ezekiel 27

A Lament for Tyre

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2“Now you, cdson of man, ceraise a lamentation over Tyre, 3and say to Tyre, who dwells at cfthe entrances to the sea, cgmerchant of the peoples to many coastlands, thus says the Lord God:

“O Tyre, you have said,
I am chperfect in beauty.’
4Your borders are ciin the heart of the seas;
your builders made perfect your beauty.
5They made all your planks
of fir trees from cjSenir;
they took cka cedar from Lebanon
to make a mast for you.
6Of cloaks of Bashan
they made your oars;
they made your deck of pines
from cmthe coasts of Cyprus,
inlaid with ivory.
7 cnOf fine embroidered linen from Egypt
was your sail,
serving as your banner;
blue and purple from cothe coasts of Elishah
was your awning.
8The inhabitants of Sidon and cpArvad
were your rowers;
your skilled men, O Tyre, were in you;
they were cqyour pilots.
9The elders of crGebal and her skilled men were in you,
cscaulking your seams;
all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in you
to barter for your wares.
10 ctPersia and cuLud and cvPut were in your army as your men of war. cwThey hung the shield and helmet in you; they gave you splendor. 11Men of cxArvad and Helech were on your walls all around, and men of Gamad were in your towers. They hung their shields on your walls all around; they made cyperfect your beauty.

12 czTarshish did dabusiness with you because of your great wealth of every kind; silver, iron, tin, and lead they exchanged for your dbwares. 13 dcJavan, ddTubal, and deMeshech traded with you; they exchanged human beings and vessels of bronze for your merchandise. 14From dfBeth-togarmah they exchanged horses, war horses, and mules dgfor your wares. 15The men of dhDedan
Hebrew; Septuagint Rhodes
traded with you. Many coastlands were your own special markets; they brought you in payment ivory tusks and ebony.
16Syria djdid business with you because of your abundant goods; they exchanged for your wares dkemeralds, dlpurple, dmembroidered work, dnfine linen, coral, and doruby. 17Judah and the land of Israel traded with you; they exchanged for your merchandise dpwheat of dqMinnith, meal,
The meaning of the Hebrew word is unknown
honey, oil, and dsbalm.
18 dtDamascus did business with you for your abundant goods, because of your great wealth of every kind; wine of Helbon and duwool of Sahar 19and casks of wine
Probable reading; Hebrew  wool of Sahar, Vedan, and Javan
from Uzal they exchanged for your wares; wrought iron, dwcassia, and dxcalamus were bartered for your merchandise.
20Dedan traded with you in saddlecloths for riding. 21Arabia and all the princes of dyKedar were your favored dealers dzin lambs, rams, and goats; in these they did business with you. 22The traders of eaSheba and ebRaamah traded with you; they exchanged ecfor your wares edthe best of all kinds of spices and all precious stones and gold. 23 eeHaran, Canneh, efEden, traders of Sheba, egAsshur, and Chilmad traded with you. 24In your market these traded with you in choice garments, in clothes of ehblue and eiembroidered work, and in carpets of colored material, bound with cords and made secure. 25 ejThe ships of ekTarshish traveled for you with your merchandise. So you were filled and heavily laden elin the heart of the seas.

26 “Your rowers have brought you out
into the high seas.
emThe east wind has wrecked you
in the heart of the seas.
27Your riches, your wares, your merchandise,
your mariners and enyour pilots,
eoyour caulkers, your dealers in merchandise,
and all your men of war who are in you,
with all your crew
that is in your midst,
sink into the heart of the seas
epon the day of your fall.
28At the sound of the cry of your pilots
eqthe countryside shakes,
29and down from their ships
ercome all who handle the oar.
The mariners and all the pilots of the sea
stand on the land
30 esand shout aloud over you
and cry out bitterly.
etThey cast dust on their heads
euand wallow in ashes;
31they evmake themselves bald for you
and put sackcloth on their waist,
and they weep over you in bitterness of soul,
with bitter mourning.
32In their wailing they ewraise a lamentation for you
and lament over you:
exWho is like Tyre,
like one destroyed in the midst of the sea?
33When your wares came from the seas,
eyyou satisfied many peoples;
with your abundant wealth and merchandise
ezyou enriched the kings of the earth.
34Now fayou are wrecked by the seas,
in the depths of the waters;
your merchandise and all your crew in your midst
have sunk with you.
35 fbAll the inhabitants of the coastlands
are appalled at you,
and fcthe hair of their kings bristles with horror;
their faces are convulsed.
36 fdThe merchants among the peoples fehiss at you;
ffyou have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more forever.’”

Prophecy Against the Prince of Tyre

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2 fgSon of man, say to fhthe prince of Tyre, Thus says the Lord God:

fi“Because your heart is proud,
and fjyou have said, ‘I am a god,
I sit in the seat of the gods,
in the heart of the seas,’
yet fkyou are but a man, and no god,
flthough you make your heart like the heart of a god
3 fmyou are indeed wiser fnthan foDaniel;
no secret is hidden from you;
4by your wisdom and your understanding
fpyou have made wealth for yourself,
and have gathered gold and silver
into your treasuries;
5by your great wisdom in your trade
you have increased your wealth,
and fqyour heart has become proud in your wealth
6therefore thus says the Lord God:
frBecause you make your heart
like the heart of a god,
7therefore, behold, I will bring fsforeigners upon you,
the most ruthless of the nations;
and they shall draw their swords against ftthe beauty of your wisdom
and defile fuyour splendor.
8 fvThey shall thrust you down into the pit,
fwand you shall die the death of the slain
in the heart of the seas.
9 fxWill you still say, ‘I am a god,’
in the presence of those who kill you,
though fyyou are but a man, and no god,
in the hands of those who slay you?
10 fzYou shall die the death of the uncircumcised
by the hand of foreigners;
gafor I have spoken, declares the Lord God.”

A Lament over the King of Tyre

11Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me: 12 gbSon of man, gcraise a lamentation over gdthe king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God:

“You were the signet of perfection,
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain

gffull of wisdom and ggperfect in beauty.
13You were in ghEden, the garden of God;
gievery precious stone was your covering,
gjsardius, topaz, and diamond,
beryl, onyx, and jasper,
sapphire,
Or lapis lazuli
glemerald, and carbuncle;
and crafted in gold were your settings
and your engravings.
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain

gnOn the day that you were created
they were prepared.
14You were an anointed goguardian cherub.
I placed you;
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain
you were on gqthe holy mountain of God;
in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.
15You were blameless in your ways
grfrom the day you were created,
till unrighteousness was found in you.
16In the abundance of gsyour trade
you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned;
so I cast you as a profane thing from gtthe mountain of God,
and I destroyed you,
Or banished you
gvO guardian cherub,
from the midst of the stones of fire.
17 gwYour heart was proud because of gxyour beauty;
you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground;
I exposed you before kings,
to feast their eyes on you.
18By the multitude of your iniquities,
in the unrighteousness of your trade
you profaned your sanctuaries;
so gyI brought fire out from your midst;
it consumed you,
and I turned you to ashes on the earth
gzin the sight of all who saw you.
19All who know you among the peoples
are appalled at you;
hayou have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more forever.”
