An Oracle Concerning Tyre and Sidon

1The goracle concerning hTyre.

Wail, O iships of Tarshish,
for Tyre is laid waste, jwithout house or harbor!
From kthe land of Cyprus
Hebrew Kittim; also verse 12

it is revealed to them.
2Be still, O inhabitants of the coast;
the merchants of mSidon, who cross the sea, have filled you.
3And on many waters
your revenue was the grain of Shihor,
the harvest of the Nile;
you were nthe merchant of the nations.
4Be ashamed, O oSidon, for the sea has spoken,
the stronghold of the sea, saying:
“I have neither labored nor given birth,
I have neither reared young men
nor brought up young women.”
5When the report comes to Egypt,
they will be in anguish
Hebrew  they will have labor pains
over the report about Tyre.
6 qCross over to Tarshish;
wail, O inhabitants of the coast!
7Is this your exultant city
rwhose origin is from days of old,
whose feet carried her
to settle far away?
8Who has purposed this
against Tyre, the bestower of crowns,
whose merchants were princes,
whose traders were the honored of the earth?
9The Lord of hosts has purposed it,
sto defile the pompous pride of all glory,
The Hebrew words for  glory and  hosts sound alike

to dishonor all the honored of the earth.
10Cross over your land like the Nile,
O daughter of Tarshish;
there is no restraint anymore.
11 uHe has stretched out his hand over the sea;
he has shaken the kingdoms;
the Lord has given command concerning Canaan
to destroy its strongholds.
12And he said:
“You will no more exult,
O oppressed virgin daughter of vSidon;
arise, wcross over to xCyprus,
even there you will have no rest.”
13Behold the land of ythe Chaldeans! This is the people that was not;
Or  that has become nothing
Assyria destined it for wild beasts. They erected aatheir siege towers, they stripped her palaces bare, they made her a ruin.

14 abWail, O ships of Tarshish,
for your stronghold is laid waste.
15In that day Tyre will be forgotten for acseventy years, like the days
Or lifetime
of one king. At the end of aeseventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute:

16 Take a harp;
go about the city,
O forgotten prostitute!
Make sweet melody;
sing many songs,
that you may be remembered.”
17At the end of afseventy years, the Lord will visit Tyre, and she will return to her wages and agwill prostitute herself with all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth. 18Her merchandise and her wages will be holy to the Lord. It will not be stored or hoarded, but her merchandise will supply abundant food and fine clothing for those who dwell before the Lord.

4because of the day that is coming to destroy
all apthe Philistines,
to cut off from aqTyre and Sidon

For the Lord is destroying the Philistines,

A Lament for Tyre

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2“Now you, atson of man, auraise a lamentation over Tyre, 3and say to Tyre, who dwells at avthe entrances to the sea, awmerchant of the peoples to many coastlands, thus says the Lord God:

“O Tyre, you have said,
I am axperfect in beauty.’
4Your borders are ayin the heart of the seas;
your builders made perfect your beauty.
5They made all your planks
of fir trees from azSenir;
they took baa cedar from Lebanon
to make a mast for you.
6Of bboaks of Bashan
they made your oars;
they made your deck of pines
from bcthe coasts of Cyprus,
inlaid with ivory.
7 bdOf fine embroidered linen from Egypt
was your sail,
serving as your banner;
blue and purple from bethe coasts of Elishah
was your awning.
8The inhabitants of Sidon and bfArvad
were your rowers;
your skilled men, O Tyre, were in you;
they were bgyour pilots.
9The elders of bhGebal and her skilled men were in you,
bicaulking your seams;
all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in you
to barter for your wares.
10 bjPersia and bkLud and blPut were in your army as your men of war. bmThey hung the shield and helmet in you; they gave you splendor. 11Men of bnArvad and Helech were on your walls all around, and men of Gamad were in your towers. They hung their shields on your walls all around; they made boperfect your beauty.

12 bpTarshish did bqbusiness with you because of your great wealth of every kind; silver, iron, tin, and lead they exchanged for your brwares. 13 bsJavan, btTubal, and buMeshech traded with you; they exchanged human beings and vessels of bronze for your merchandise. 14From bvBeth-togarmah they exchanged horses, war horses, and mules bwfor your wares. 15The men of bxDedan
Hebrew; Septuagint Rhodes
traded with you. Many coastlands were your own special markets; they brought you in payment ivory tusks and ebony.
16Syria bzdid business with you because of your abundant goods; they exchanged for your wares caemeralds, cbpurple, ccembroidered work, cdfine linen, coral, and ceruby. 17Judah and the land of Israel traded with you; they exchanged for your merchandise cfwheat of cgMinnith, meal,
The meaning of the Hebrew word is unknown
honey, oil, and cibalm.
18 cjDamascus did business with you for your abundant goods, because of your great wealth of every kind; wine of Helbon and ckwool of Sahar 19and casks of wine
Probable reading; Hebrew  wool of Sahar, Vedan, and Javan
from Uzal they exchanged for your wares; wrought iron, cmcassia, and cncalamus were bartered for your merchandise.
20Dedan traded with you in saddlecloths for riding. 21Arabia and all the princes of coKedar were your favored dealers cpin lambs, rams, and goats; in these they did business with you. 22The traders of cqSheba and crRaamah traded with you; they exchanged csfor your wares ctthe best of all kinds of spices and all precious stones and gold. 23 cuHaran, Canneh, cvEden, traders of Sheba, cwAsshur, and Chilmad traded with you. 24In your market these traded with you in choice garments, in clothes of cxblue and cyembroidered work, and in carpets of colored material, bound with cords and made secure. 25 czThe ships of daTarshish traveled for you with your merchandise. So you were filled and heavily laden dbin the heart of the seas.

26 “Your rowers have brought you out
into the high seas.
dcThe east wind has wrecked you
in the heart of the seas.
27Your riches, your wares, your merchandise,
your mariners and ddyour pilots,
deyour caulkers, your dealers in merchandise,
and all your men of war who are in you,
with all your crew
that is in your midst,
sink into the heart of the seas
dfon the day of your fall.
28At the sound of the cry of your pilots
dgthe countryside shakes,
29and down from their ships
dhcome all who handle the oar.
The mariners and all the pilots of the sea
stand on the land
30 diand shout aloud over you
and cry out bitterly.
djThey cast dust on their heads
dkand wallow in ashes;
31they dlmake themselves bald for you
and put sackcloth on their waist,
and they weep over you in bitterness of soul,
with bitter mourning.
32In their wailing they dmraise a lamentation for you
and lament over you:
dnWho is like Tyre,
like one destroyed in the midst of the sea?
33When your wares came from the seas,
doyou satisfied many peoples;
with your abundant wealth and merchandise
dpyou enriched the kings of the earth.
34Now dqyou are wrecked by the seas,
in the depths of the waters;
your merchandise and all your crew in your midst
have sunk with you.
35 drAll the inhabitants of the coastlands
are appalled at you,
and dsthe hair of their kings bristles with horror;
their faces are convulsed.
36 dtThe merchants among the peoples duhiss at you;
dvyou have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more forever.’”

Prophecy Against the Prince of Tyre

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2 dwSon of man, say to dxthe prince of Tyre, Thus says the Lord God:

dy“Because your heart is proud,
and dzyou have said, ‘I am a god,
I sit in the seat of the gods,
in the heart of the seas,’
yet eayou are but a man, and no god,
ebthough you make your heart like the heart of a god
3 ecyou are indeed wiser edthan eeDaniel;
no secret is hidden from you;
4by your wisdom and your understanding
efyou have made wealth for yourself,
and have gathered gold and silver
into your treasuries;
5by your great wisdom in your trade
you have increased your wealth,
and egyour heart has become proud in your wealth
6therefore thus says the Lord God:
ehBecause you make your heart
like the heart of a god,
7therefore, behold, I will bring eiforeigners upon you,
the most ruthless of the nations;
and they shall draw their swords against ejthe beauty of your wisdom
and defile ekyour splendor.
8 elThey shall thrust you down into the pit,
emand you shall die the death of the slain
in the heart of the seas.
9 enWill you still say, ‘I am a god,’
in the presence of those who kill you,
though eoyou are but a man, and no god,
in the hands of those who slay you?
10 epYou shall die the death of the uncircumcised
by the hand of foreigners;
eqfor I have spoken, declares the Lord God.”

A Lament over the King of Tyre

11Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me: 12 erSon of man, esraise a lamentation over etthe king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God:

“You were the signet of perfection,
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain

evfull of wisdom and ewperfect in beauty.
13You were in exEden, the garden of God;
eyevery precious stone was your covering,
ezsardius, topaz, and diamond,
beryl, onyx, and jasper,
sapphire,
Or lapis lazuli
fbemerald, and carbuncle;
and crafted in gold were your settings
and your engravings.
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain

fdOn the day that you were created
they were prepared.
14You were an anointed feguardian cherub.
I placed you;
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain
you were on fgthe holy mountain of God;
in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.
15You were blameless in your ways
fhfrom the day you were created,
till unrighteousness was found in you.
16In the abundance of fiyour trade
you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned;
so I cast you as a profane thing from fjthe mountain of God,
and I destroyed you,
Or banished you
flO guardian cherub,
from the midst of the stones of fire.
17 fmYour heart was proud because of fnyour beauty;
you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground;
I exposed you before kings,
to feast their eyes on you.
18By the multitude of your iniquities,
in the unrighteousness of your trade
you profaned your sanctuaries;
so foI brought fire out from your midst;
it consumed you,
and I turned you to ashes on the earth
fpin the sight of all who saw you.
19All who know you among the peoples
are appalled at you;
fqyou have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more forever.”

Prophecy Against Sidon

20The word of the Lord came to me: 21 frSon of man, fsset your face toward ftSidon, and fuprophesy against her 22and say, Thus says the Lord God:

Behold, fvI am against you, O Sidon,
and fwI will manifest my glory in your midst.
And fxthey shall know that I am the Lord
fywhen I execute judgments in her
and fzmanifest my holiness in her;
23for I will send gapestilence into her,
and blood into her streets;
and the slain shall fall in her midst,
by the sword that is against her on every side.
Then they will know that I am the Lord.
24“And for the house of Israel gbthere shall be no more a brier to prick or gca thorn to hurt them among all their neighbors gdwho have treated them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.

Israel Gathered in Security

25Thus says the Lord God: geWhen I gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and gfmanifest my holiness in them in the sight of the nations, ggthen they shall dwell in their own land that I gave to my servant Jacob. 26 ghAnd they shall dwell securely in it, and they shall build houses and plant vineyards. They shall dwell securely, giwhen I execute judgments upon all their neighbors gjwho have treated them with contempt. gkThen they will know that I am the Lord their God.”
