Joshua 5

The New Generation Circumcised

1As soon as all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites awho were by the sea, bheard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the people of Israel until they had crossed over, their hearts cmelted and dthere was no longer any spirit in them because of the people of Israel.

2At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make eflint knives and circumcise the sons of Israel a second time.” 3So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the sons of Israel at Gibeath-haaraloth.
Gibeath-haaraloth means the hill of the foreskins
4And this is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: gall the males of the people who came out of Egypt, all the men of war, had died in the wilderness on the way after they had come out of Egypt. 5Though all the people who came out had been circumcised, yet all the people who were born on the way in the wilderness after they had come out of Egypt had not been circumcised. 6For the people of Israel walked hforty years in the wilderness, until all the nation, the men of war who came out of Egypt, perished, because they did not obey the voice of the Lord; the Lord iswore to them that he would not let them see the land that the Lord had sworn to their fathers to give to us, ja land flowing with milk and honey. 7So it was ktheir children, whom he raised up in their place, that Joshua circumcised. For they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way.

8When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished, they remained in their places in the camp until they were healed. 9And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the lreproach of Egypt from you.” And so the name of that place is called mGilgal
Gilgal sounds like the Hebrew for to roll
to this day.

First Passover in Canaan

10While the people of Israel were encamped at Gilgal, they kept the Passover oon the fourteenth day of the month in the evening on the plains of Jericho. 11And the day after the Passover, on that very day, they ate of the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. 12And pthe manna ceased the day after they ate of the produce of the land. And there was no longer manna for the people of Israel, but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

The Commander of the Lord’s Army

13When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, qa man was standing before him rwith his drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?” 14And he said, “No; but I am the commander of the army of the Lord. Now I have come.” And Joshua sfell on his face to the earth and worshiped and said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?” 15And the commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, t“Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

The Allotment for Judah

1The allotment for the tribe of the people of Judah according to their clans reached southward uto the boundary of Edom, to vthe wilderness of Zin at the farthest south. 2And their south boundary ran from the end of the wSalt Sea, from the bay that faces southward. 3It goes out southward of xthe ascent of Akrabbim, passes along to Zin, and goes up south of Kadesh-barnea, along by Hezron, up to Addar, turns about to Karka, 4passes along to Azmon, goes out by ythe Brook of Egypt, and comes to its end at the sea. This shall be your south boundary. 5And the east boundary is the zSalt Sea, to the mouth of the Jordan. And the boundary on the north side runs from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan. 6And the boundary goes up to aaBeth-hoglah and passes along north of abBeth-arabah. And the boundary goes up to acthe stone of Bohan the son of Reuben. 7And the boundary goes up to Debir from adthe Valley of Achor, and so northward, turning toward Gilgal, which is opposite aethe ascent of Adummim, which is on the south side of the valley. And the boundary passes along to the waters of afEn-shemesh and ends at agEn-rogel. 8Then the boundary goes up by ahthe Valley of the Son of Hinnom at the southern shoulder of the Jebusite ( aithat is, Jerusalem). And the boundary goes up to the top of the mountain that lies over against the Valley of Hinnom, on the west, at the northern end of the Valley ajof Rephaim. 9Then the boundary extends from the top of the mountain akto the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, and from there to the cities of Mount Ephron. Then the boundary comes to an end at the sea. 12And the west boundary was aqthe Great Sea with its coastline. This is the boundary around the people of Judah according to their clans.

13According to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, he gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh a portion among the people of Judah, arKiriath-arba, that is, asHebron (Arba was the father of Anak). 14And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak, atSheshai and Ahiman and Talmai, the descendants of Anak. 15And he went up from there against the inhabitants of Debir. auNow the name of Debir formerly was Kiriath-sepher. 16And Caleb said, “Whoever strikes Kiriath-sepher and captures it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter as wife.” 17 avAnd Othniel the son of Kenaz, awthe brother of Caleb, captured it. And he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife. 18When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she got off her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?” 19She said to him, “Give me a blessing. Since you have given me the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water.” And he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.
