2 Kings 17:7-18

Exile Because of Idolatry

7And this occurred because the people of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, hwho had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods 8 iand walked in the customs of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel, jand in the customs that the kings of Israel had practiced. 9And the people of Israel did secretly against the Lord their God things that were not right. They built for themselves high places in all their towns, kfrom watchtower to fortified city. 10They set up for themselves lpillars and Asherim on every high hill and under every green tree, 11and there they made offerings on all the high places, as the nations did whom the Lord carried away before them. And they did wicked things, provoking the Lord to anger, 12and they served idols, mof which the Lord had said to them, “You shall not do this.” 13Yet the Lord nwarned Israel and Judah oby every prophet pand every seer, saying, qTurn from your evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes, in accordance with all the Law that I commanded your fathers, and that I sent to you by my servants the prophets.”

14But they would not listen, rbut were stubborn, as their fathers had been, who did not believe in the Lord their God. 15They despised his statutes sand his covenant that he made with their fathers and the warnings that he gave them. They went after tfalse idols uand became false, and they followed the nations that were around them, concerning whom the vLord had commanded them that they should not do like them. 16And they abandoned all the commandments of the Lord their God, and made for themselves metal images of wtwo calves; and they xmade an Asherah and yworshiped all the host of heaven and served zBaal. 17 aaAnd they burned their sons and their daughters as offerings
Or made their sons and their daughters pass through the fire
and used acdivination and adomens and aesold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger.
18Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. None was left but afthe tribe of Judah only.

2 Chronicles 36:12-17

12He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord his God. He did not humble himself before agJeremiah the prophet, who spoke from the mouth of the Lord. 13 ahHe also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God. aiHe stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the Lord, the God of Israel. 14All the officers of the priests and the people likewise were exceedingly unfaithful, following all the abominations of the nations. And they polluted the house of the Lord that he had made holy in Jerusalem.

15The Lord, the God of their fathers, ajsent persistently to them by his messengers, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place. 16 akBut they kept mocking the messengers of God, aldespising his words and scoffing at his prophets, amuntil the wrath of the Lord rose against his people, until there was no remedy.

Jerusalem Captured and Burned

17 anTherefore he brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary and had no compassion on young man or virgin, old man or aged. He gave them all into his hand.

Jeremiah 19:3-13

3You shall say, aoHear the word of the Lord, apO kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing such disaster upon this place that aqthe ears of everyone who hears of it will tingle. 4 arBecause the people have forsaken me and have profaned this place by making offerings in it to other gods whom neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have known; asand because they have filled this place with the blood of innocents, 5 atand have built the high places of Baal auto burn their sons in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal, avwhich I did not command or decree, nor did it come into my mind 6therefore, awbehold, days are coming, declares the Lord, when this place shall no more be called Topheth, or axthe Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter. 7And in this place ayI will make void the plans of Judah and Jerusalem, azand will cause their people to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of those who seek their life. baI will give their dead bodies for food to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the earth. 8And I will make this city bba horror, bca thing to be hissed at. Everyone who passes by it will be horrified and will hiss because of all its wounds. 9 bdAnd I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and their daughters, and everyone shall eat the flesh of his neighbor bein the siege and in the distress, with which their enemies and those who seek their life afflict them.’

10“Then bfyou shall break bgthe flask in the sight of the men who go with you, 11and shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: So will I break this people and this city, bhas one breaks a potter’s vessel, biso that it can never be mended. bjMen shall bury in Topheth because there will be no place else to bury. 12Thus will I do to this place, declares the Lord, and to its inhabitants, making this city bklike Topheth. 13The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judahblall the houses on whose bmroofs offerings have been offered bnto all the host of heaven, and bodrink offerings have been poured out to other gods—shall be defiled bplike the place of Topheth.’”

Jeremiah 44:2-6

2Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: You have seen all the disaster that I brought upon Jerusalem and upon all the cities of Judah. Behold, this day bqthey are a desolation, and no one dwells in them, 3because of the evil that they committed, brprovoking me to anger, bsin that they went to make offerings btand serve other gods that they knew not, neither they, nor you, nor your fathers. 4 buYet I persistently sent to you all my servants the prophets, saying, ‘Oh, do not do this abomination that I hate!’ 5 bvBut they did not listen bwor incline their ear, to turn from their evil and make no offerings to other gods. 6 bxTherefore my wrath and my anger were poured out and kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, byand they became a waste and a desolation, as at this day.
