Israel’s Unfaithfulness

11 cAnd the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals. 12 dAnd they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. eThey went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and fbowed down to them. gAnd they provoked the Lord to anger. 13They abandoned the Lord hand served the Baals and the Ashtaroth. 14 iSo the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he jgave them over to plunderers, who plundered them. kAnd he sold them into the hand of their surrounding enemies, lso that they could no longer withstand their enemies. 15Whenever they marched out, the hand of the Lord was against them for harm, as the Lord had warned, mand as the Lord had sworn to them. And they were in terrible distress.

2And the Lord nsold them into the hand of oJabin king of Canaan, who reigned in pHazor. 7So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and uhe sold them into the hand of the Philistines and into the hand of the Ammonites, 8and they crushed and oppressed the people of Israel that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the people of Israel who were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. 9And the Ammonites crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah and against Benjamin and against the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was severely distressed.

10And the people of Israel vcried out to the Lord, saying, “We have sinned against you, because wwe have forsaken our God and have served the Baals.”

11Then 3,000 men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, “Do you not know that zthe Philistines are rulers over us? What then is this that you have done to us?” And he said to them, “As they did to me, so have I done to them.” 12And they said to him, “We have come down to bind you, that we may give you into the hands of the Philistines.” And Samson said to them, “Swear to me that you will not attack me yourselves.”

1 Samuel 13:3-7

3Jonathan defeated aathe garrison of the Philistines that was abat Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul acblew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear.” 4And all Israel heard it said that Saul had defeated the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel had become a stench to the Philistines. And the people were called out to join Saul at Gilgal.

5And the Philistines mustered to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen and troops adlike the sand on the seashore in multitude. They came up and encamped in Michmash, to the east of aeBeth-aven. 6When the men of Israel saw that they were in trouble (for the people were hard pressed), the people hid themselves afin caves and in holes and in rocks and in tombs and in cisterns, 7and some Hebrews crossed the fords of the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

1 Samuel 13:19-23

19 agNow there was no blacksmith to be found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make themselves swords or spears.” 20But every one of the Israelites went down to the Philistines to sharpen his plowshare, his mattock, his axe, or his sickle,
Septuagint; Hebrew plowshare
21and the charge was two-thirds of a shekel
Hebrew  was a pim
for the plowshares and for the mattocks, and a third of a shekel
A  shekel was about 2/5 ounce or 11 grams
for sharpening the axes and for setting the goads.
The meaning of the Hebrew verse is uncertain
22So on the day of the battle althere was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people with Saul and Jonathan, but Saul and Jonathan his son had them. 23And amthe garrison of the Philistines went out to the anpass of aoMichmash.
