Judges 5

The Song of Deborah and Barak

1 aThen sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day:

2 “That the leaders took the lead in Israel,
that bthe people offered themselves willingly,
bless the Lord!
3 Hear, O kings; give ear, O princes;
to the Lord I will sing;
I will make melody to the Lord, the God of Israel.
4 Lord, cwhen you went out from Seir,
when you marched from the region of Edom,
dthe earth trembled
and the heavens dropped,
yes, the clouds dropped water.
5The mountains equaked before the Lord,
feven Sinai before the Lord, the God of Israel.
6 “In the days of gShamgar, son of Anath,
in the days of hJael, ithe highways were abandoned,
and travelers kept to the byways.
7The villagers ceased in Israel;
they ceased to be until I arose;
I, Deborah, arose as a mother in Israel.
8 jWhen new gods were chosen,
then war was in the gates.
kWas shield or spear to be seen
among forty thousand in Israel?
9My heart goes out to the commanders of Israel
who loffered themselves willingly among the people.
Bless the Lord.
10 “Tell of it, myou who ride on white donkeys,
you who sit on rich carpets
The meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain; it may connote saddle blankets

and you who walk by the way.
11To the sound of musicians
Or archers; the meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain
at the watering places,
there they repeat the righteous triumphs of the Lord,
the righteous triumphs of his villagers in Israel.
“Then down to the gates marched the people of the Lord.
12 pAwake, awake, Deborah!
Awake, awake, break out in a song!
Arise, Barak, qlead away your captives,
O son of Abinoam.
13Then down marched the remnant of the noble;
the people of the Lord marched down for me against the mighty.
14From rEphraim their root sthey marched down into the valley,
Septuagint; Hebrew in Amalek

following you, Benjamin, with your kinsmen;
from uMachir marched down the commanders,
and from Zebulun those who bear the lieutenant’s
Hebrew commander’s
staff;
15the princes of Issachar came with Deborah,
and Issachar faithful to wBarak;
into the valley they rushed at his heels.
Among the clans of Reuben
there were great searchings of heart.
16Why did you sit still xamong the sheepfolds,
to hear the whistling for the flocks?
Among the clans of Reuben
there were great searchings of heart.
17 yGilead stayed beyond the Jordan;
zand Dan, why did he stay with the ships?
aaAsher sat still abat the coast of the sea,
staying by his landings.
18 acZebulun is a people who risked their lives to the death;
adNaphtali, too, on the heights of the field.
19 “The kings came, they fought;
then fought the kings of Canaan,
at aeTaanach, by the waters of afMegiddo;
agthey got no spoils of silver.
20 ahFrom heaven the stars fought,
from their courses they fought against Sisera.
21 aiThe torrent Kishon swept them away,
the ancient torrent, the torrent Kishon.
March on, my soul, with might!
22 Then loud beat the horseshoofs
with the galloping, galloping of his steeds.
23 Curse Meroz, says the angel of the Lord,
curse its inhabitants thoroughly,
ajbecause they did not come to the help of the Lord,
to the help of the Lord against the mighty.
24 “Most blessed of women be akJael,
the wife of Heber the Kenite,
of tent-dwelling women most blessed.
25 alHe asked for water and she gave him milk;
she brought him curds in a noble’s bowl.
26 amShe sent her hand to the tent peg
and her right hand to the workmen’s mallet;
she struck Sisera;
she crushed his head;
she shattered and pierced his temple.
27Between her feet
he sank, he fell, he lay still;
between her feet
he sank, he fell;
where he sank,
there he felldead.
28 anOut of the window she peered,
the mother of Sisera wailed through aothe lattice:
Why is his chariot so long in coming?
Why tarry the hoofbeats of his chariots?’
29Her wisest princesses answer,
indeed, she answers herself,
30‘Have they not found and apdivided the spoil?—
A womb or two for every man;
spoil of dyed materials for Sisera,
spoil of dyed materials embroidered,
two pieces of dyed work embroidered for the neck as spoil?’
31 aqSo may all your enemies perish, O Lord!
But your friends be arlike the sun asas he rises in his might.”
atAnd the land had rest for forty years.

2 Samuel 22

David’s Song of Deliverance

1And David spoke auto the Lord the words of this song on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. 2 avHe said,

aw“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
3 axmy
Septuagint (compare Psalm 18:2); Hebrew lacks  my
God, my rock, azin whom I take refuge,
bamy shield, and bbthe horn of my salvation,
bcmy stronghold and bdmy refuge,
my savior; you save me from violence.
4I call upon the Lord, who is beworthy to be praised,
and I am saved from my enemies.
5 bf“For the waves of death encompassed me,
the torrents of destruction assailed me;
Or terrified me

6 bhthe cords of Sheol entangled me;
the snares of death confronted me.
7 bi“In my distress I called upon the Lord;
to my God I called.
From his temple he heard my voice,
and my cry bjcame to his ears.
8 “Then bkthe earth reeled and rocked;
blthe foundations of the heavens trembled
and quaked, because he was angry.
9Smoke went up from his nostrils,
Or in his wrath

and devouring fire from his mouth;
bnglowing coals flamed forth from him.
10 boHe bowed the heavens and bpcame down;
bqthick darkness was under his feet.
11He rode on a cherub and flew;
he was seen on brthe wings of the wind.
12He made bsdarkness around him bthis canopy,
thick clouds, a gathering of water.
13Out of the brightness before him
bucoals of fire flamed forth.
14 bvThe Lord thundered from heaven,
and the Most High uttered his voice.
15And he sent out bwarrows and scattered them;
lightning, and routed them.
16Then the channels of the sea were seen;
the foundations of the world were laid bare,
at the rebuke of the Lord,
at the bxblast of the breath of his nostrils.
17 by“He sent from on high, he took me;
he drew me out of many waters.
18He rescued me from my strong enemy,
from those who hated me,
for they were too mighty for me.
19They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
but the Lord was my support.
20 bzHe brought me out into a broad place;
he rescued me, because cahe delighted in me.
21 “The Lord cbdealt with me according to my righteousness;
according to the cccleanness of my hands he rewarded me.
22 cdFor I have kept the ways of the Lord
and have not wickedly departed from my God.
23 ceFor all his rules were before me,
and from his statutes I did not turn aside.
24I was cfblameless before him,
and I kept myself from guilt.
25 cgAnd the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
according to my cleanness in his sight.
26 chWith the merciful you show yourself merciful;
with the ciblameless man you show yourself blameless;
27with the purified you deal purely,
and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
28 cjYou save a humble people,
ckbut your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down.
29 clFor you are my lamp, O Lord,
and my God lightens my darkness.
30For by you I can run against a troop,
and by my God I can leap over a wall.
31This Godcmhis way is perfect;
the cnword of the Lord proves true;
he is coa shield for all those who take refuge in him.
32 For who is God, but the Lord?
cpAnd who is a rock, except our God?
33This God is my cqstrong refuge
and has made my
Or his; also verse 34
way blameless.
Compare Psalm 18:32; Hebrew he has blamelessly set my way free, or he has made my way spring up blamelessly

34 ctHe made my feet like the feet of a deer
and set me secure cuon the heights.
35 cvHe trains my hands for war,
so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
36You have given me the shield of your salvation,
and your gentleness made me great.
37 cwYou gave a wide place for my steps under me,
and my feet
Hebrew ankles
did not slip;
38I pursued my enemies and destroyed them,
and did not turn back until they were consumed.
39I consumed them; I thrust them through, so that they did not rise;
they fell cyunder my feet.
40For you equipped me with strength for the battle;
you made czthose who rise against me sink under me.
41You damade my enemies turn their backs to me,
Or  You gave me my enemies’ necks

those who hated me, and I destroyed them.
42They looked, but there was none to save;
they cried to the Lord, but dche did not answer them.
43I beat them fine ddas the dust of the earth;
I crushed them and stamped them down delike the mire of the streets.
44 “You delivered me from strife with my people;
Septuagint  with the peoples

you kept me as the head of dgthe nations;
dhpeople whom I had not known served me.
45Foreigners came cringing to me;
as soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me.
46Foreigners lost heart
and came trembling
Compare Psalm 18:45; Hebrew equipped themselves
djout of their fortresses.
47 “The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock,
and exalted be dkmy God, dlthe rock of my salvation,
48the God who gave me vengeance
and dmbrought down peoples under me,
49who brought me out from my enemies;
you exalted me above dnthose who rose against me;
you delivered me from domen of violence.
50 dpFor this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations,
and sing praises to your name.
51 dqGreat salvation he brings
Or He is a tower of salvation
to his king,
and shows steadfast love to dshis anointed,
to David and his offspring dtforever.”

Psalms 106:12

12Then duthey believed his words;
they dvsang his praise.

Psalms 107:8

8 dwLet them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!

Psalms 107:15

15 dxLet them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!

Psalms 107:21-22

21 dyLet them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
22And let them dzoffer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
and eatell of his deeds in ebsongs of joy!
