than the punishment

The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain

Lamentations 4:9

9 Happier were the victims of the sword
than the victims of hunger,
who wasted away, pierced
by lack of the fruits of the field.

Daniel 9:12

12He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us and against four rulers who ruled us,
Or  our judges who judged us
by hbringing upon us a great calamity. iFor under the whole heaven there has not been done anything like what has been done against Jerusalem.
