Leviticus 13

Laws About Leprosy

1The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 2“When a person has on the skin of his body a aswelling or an eruption or a spot, and it turns into a case of leprous
Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases
disease on the skin of his body, cthen he shall be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons the priests,
3and the priest shall examine the diseased area on the skin of his body. And if the hair in the diseased area has turned white and the disease appears to be deeper than the skin of his body, it is a case of leprous disease. When the priest has examined him, he shall pronounce him unclean. 4But if the spot is white in the skin of his body and appears no deeper than the skin, and the hair in it has not turned white, dthe priest shall shut up the diseased person for seven days. 5And the priest shall examine him on the seventh day, and if in his eyes the disease is checked and the disease has not spread in the skin, then the epriest shall shut him up for another seven days. 6And the priest shall examine him again on the seventh day, and if the diseased area has faded and the disease has not spread in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean; it is only an eruption. And fhe shall wash his clothes and be clean. 7But if the eruption spreads in the skin, after he has shown himself to the priest for his cleansing, he shall appear again before the priest. 8And the priest shall look, and if the eruption has spread in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is a leprous disease.

9“When a man is afflicted with a leprous disease, he shall be brought to the priest, 10and the priest shall look. And if there is a gwhite swelling in the skin that has turned the hair white, and there is raw flesh in the swelling, 11it is a chronic leprous disease in the skin of his body, and the priest shall pronounce him unclean. hHe shall not shut him up, for he is unclean. 12And if the leprous disease breaks out in the skin, so that the leprous disease covers all the skin of the diseased person from head to foot, so far as the priest can see, 13then the priest shall look, and if the leprous disease has covered all his body, he shall pronounce him clean of the disease; it has all turned white, and he is clean. 14But when raw flesh appears on him, he shall be unclean. 15And the priest shall examine the raw flesh and pronounce him unclean. Raw flesh is unclean, for it is a leprous disease. 16But if the raw flesh recovers and turns white again, then he shall come to the priest, 17and the priest shall examine him, and if the disease has turned white, then the priest shall pronounce the diseased person clean; he is clean.

18If there is in the skin of one’s body a iboil and it heals, 19and in the place of the boil there comes a white swelling or a jreddish-white spot, then it shall be shown to the priest. 20And the priest shall look, and if it appears deeper than the skin and its hair has turned white, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is a case of leprous disease that has broken out in the boil. 21But if the priest examines it and there is no white hair in it and it is not deeper than the skin, but has faded, then the priest shall shut him up seven days. 22And if it spreads in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is a disease. 23But kif the spot remains in one place and does not spread, it is the scar of the boil, and the priest shall pronounce him clean.

24Or, when the body has a burn on its skin and the raw flesh of the burn becomes a spot, lreddish-white or white, 25the priest shall examine it, and if the hair in the spot has turned white and it appears deeper than the skin, then it is a leprous disease. It has broken out in the burn, and the priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is a case of leprous disease. 26But if the priest examines it and there is no white hair in the spot and it is no deeper than the skin, but has faded, the priest shall shut him up seven days, 27and the priest shall examine him the seventh day. If it is spreading in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is a case of leprous disease. 28But if the spot remains min one place and does not spread in the skin, but has faded, it is a swelling from the burn, and the priest shall pronounce him clean, for it is the scar of the burn.

29“When a man or woman has a disease on the head or the beard, 30the priest shall examine the disease. And if it appears deeper than the skin, and the hair in it is yellow and thin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is an itch, a leprous disease of the head or the beard. 31And if the priest examines the itching disease and it appears no deeper than the skin and there is no black hair in it, then the priest shall shut up the person with the itching disease for seven days, 32and on the seventh day the priest shall examine the disease. If the itch has not spread, and there is in it no yellow hair, and the itch appears to be no deeper than the skin, 33then he shall shave himself, but the itch he shall not shave; and the priest shall shut up the person with the itching disease for another seven days. 34And on the seventh day the priest shall examine the itch, and if the itch has not spread in the skin and it appears to be no deeper than the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean. And nhe shall wash his clothes and be clean. 35But if the itch spreads in the skin after his cleansing, 36then the priest shall examine him, and if the itch has spread in the skin, the priest need not seek for the yellow hair; he is unclean. 37But if in his eyes the itch is unchanged and black hair has grown in it, the itch is healed and he is clean, and the priest shall pronounce him clean.

38“When a man or a woman has spots on the skin of the body, white spots, 39the priest shall look, and if the spots on the skin of the body are of a dull white, it is leukoderma that has broken out in the skin; he is clean.

40If a man’s hair falls out from his head, he is bald; he is clean. 41And if a man’s hair falls out from his forehead, he has baldness of the forehead; he is clean. 42But if there is on the bald head or the bald forehead a reddish-white diseased area, it is a leprous disease breaking out on his bald head or his bald forehead. 43Then the priest shall examine him, and if the diseased swelling is reddish-white on his bald head or on his bald forehead, like the appearance of leprous disease in the skin of the body, 44he is a leprous man, he is unclean. The priest must pronounce him unclean; his disease is on his head.

45“The leprous person who has the disease shall wear torn clothes and olet the hair of his head hang loose, and he shall pcover his upper lip

and cry out, rUnclean, unclean.’
46He shall remain unclean as long as he has the disease. He is unclean. He shall live alone. His dwelling shall be soutside the camp.

47“When there is a case of leprous disease in a tgarment, whether a woolen or a linen garment, 48in warp or woof of linen or wool, or in a skin or in anything made of skin, 49if the disease is greenish or reddish in the garment, or in the skin or in the warp or the woof or in any article made of skin, it is a case of leprous disease, and it shall be shown to the priest. 50And the priest shall examine the disease and shut up that which has the disease for seven days. 51Then he shall examine the disease on the seventh day. If the disease has spread in the garment, in the warp or the woof, or in the skin, whatever be the use of the skin, the disease is a upersistent leprous disease; it is unclean. 52And he shall burn the garment, or the warp or the woof, the wool or the linen, or any article made of skin that is diseased, for it is a persistent leprous disease. It shall be burned in the fire.

53“And if the priest examines, and if the disease has not spread in the garment, in the warp or the woof or in any article made of skin, 54then the priest shall command that they wash the thing in which is the disease, and he shall shut it up for another seven days. 55And the priest shall examine the diseased thing after it has been washed. And if the appearance of the diseased area has not changed, though the disease has not spread, it is unclean. You shall burn it in the fire, whether the rot is on the back or on the front.

56“But if the priest examines, and if the diseased area has faded after it has been washed, he shall tear it out of the garment or the skin or the warp or the woof. 57Then if it appears again in the garment, in the warp or the woof, or in any article made of skin, it is spreading. You shall burn with fire whatever has the disease. 58But the garment, or the warp or the woof, or any article made of skin from which the disease departs when you have washed it, shall then be washed a second time, and be clean.”

59This is the law for a case of leprous disease in a garment of wool or linen, either in the warp or the woof, or in any article made of skin, to determine whether it is clean or unclean.

Leviticus 14

Laws for Cleansing Lepers

1The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2“This shall be the law of the leprous person for the day of his cleansing. vHe shall be brought to the priest, 3and the priest shall go wout of the camp, and the priest shall look. Then, if the case of leprous disease is healed in the leprous person, 4the priest shall command them to take for him who is to be cleansed two live

clean birds and ycedarwood and zscarlet yarn and aahyssop.
5And the priest shall command them to kill one of the birds in an earthenware vessel over fresh

6He shall take the live bird with the cedarwood and the scarlet yarn and the hyssop, and dip them and the live bird in the blood of the bird that was killed over the fresh water. 7And he shall acsprinkle it adseven times on him who is to be cleansed of the leprous disease. Then he shall pronounce him clean and shall aelet the living bird go afinto the open field. 8And he who is to be cleansed agshall wash his clothes and shave off all his hair and bathe himself in water, and he shall be clean. And after that he may come into the camp, but ahlive outside his tent seven days. 9And aion the seventh day he shall shave off all his hair from his head, his beard, and his eyebrows. He shall shave off all his hair, and then he ajshall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and he shall be clean.

10“And on the eighth day he akshall take two male lambs without blemish, and one ewe lamb a year old without blemish, and a algrain offering of three tenths of an ephah
An  ephah was about 3/5 bushel or 22 liters
of fine flour mixed with oil, and one log
A  log was about 1/3 quart or 0.3 liter
of oil.
11And the priest who cleanses him shall set the man who is to be cleansed and these things before the Lord, at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 12And the priest shall take one of the male lambs and aooffer it for a guilt offering, along with the log of oil, and apwave them for a wave offering before the Lord. 13And he shall kill the lamb aqin the place where they kill the sin offering and the burnt offering, in the place of the sanctuary. For arthe guilt offering, like the sin offering, belongs to the priest; asit is most holy. 14The priest shall take some of the blood of the guilt offering, and the priest shall put it aton the lobe of the right ear of him who is to be cleansed and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot. 15Then the priest shall take some of the log of oil and pour it into the palm of his own left hand 16and dip his right finger in the oil that is in his left hand and sprinkle some oil with his finger seven times before the Lord. 17And some of the oil that remains in his hand the priest shall put on the lobe of the right ear of him who is to be cleansed and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot, on top of the blood of the guilt offering. 18And the rest of the oil that is in the priest’s hand he shall put on the head of him who is to be cleansed. auThen the priest shall make atonement for him before the Lord. 19The priest shall offer the sin offering, to make atonement for him who is to be cleansed from his uncleanness. And afterward he shall kill the burnt offering. 20And the priest shall offer the burnt offering and the avgrain offering on the altar. awThus the priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be clean.

21“But axif he is poor and cannot afford so much, then he shall take one male lamb for a guilt offering ayto be waved, to make atonement for him, and a tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering, and a log of oil; 22 azalso two turtledoves or two pigeons, whichever he can afford. The one shall be a sin offering and the other a burnt offering. 23 baAnd on the eighth day he shall bring them for his cleansing to the priest, to the entrance of the tent of meeting, before the Lord. 24 bbAnd the priest shall take the lamb of the guilt offering and the log of oil, and the priest shall wave them for a wave offering before the Lord. 25And he shall kill the lamb of the guilt offering. bcAnd the priest shall take some of the blood of the guilt offering and put it on the lobe of the right ear of him who is to be cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot. 26And the priest shall pour some of the oil into the palm of his own left hand, 27and shall sprinkle with his right finger some of the oil that is in his left hand seven times before the Lord. 28And the priest shall put some of the oil that is in his hand on the lobe of the right ear of him who is to be cleansed and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot, in the place where the blood of the guilt offering was put. 29And the rest of the oil that is in the priest’s hand he shall put on the head of him who is to be cleansed, to make atonement for him before the Lord. 30And he shall offer, of the bdturtledoves or pigeons, whichever he can afford, 31one

32This is the law for him in whom is a case of leprous disease, who cannot afford bgthe offerings for his cleansing.”

Laws for Cleansing Houses

33The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 34“When you come into the land of Canaan, which I give you bhfor a possession, and I put a case of leprous disease in a house in the land of your possession, 35then he who owns the house shall come and tell the priest, ‘There seems to me to be some case of bidisease in my house.’ 36Then the priest shall command that they empty the house before the priest goes to examine the disease, lest all that is in the house be declared unclean. And afterward the priest shall go in to see the house. 37And he shall examine the disease. And if the disease is in the walls of the house with greenish or reddish spots, and if it appears to be deeper than the surface, 38then the priest shall go out of the house to the door of the house and shut up the house seven days. 39And the priest shall come again on the seventh day, and look. If the disease has spread in the walls of the house, 40then the priest shall command that they take out the stones in which is the disease and throw them into an unclean place outside the city. 41And he shall have the inside of the house scraped all around, and the plaster that they scrape off they shall pour out in an unclean place outside the city. 42Then they shall take other stones and put them in the place of those stones, and he shall take other plaster and plaster the house.

43“If the disease breaks out again in the house, after he has taken out the stones and scraped the house and plastered it, 44then the priest shall go and look. And if the disease has spread in the house, it is a bjpersistent leprous disease in the house; it is unclean. 45And he shall break down the house, its stones and timber and all the plaster of the house, and he shall carry them out of the city to an unclean place. 46Moreover, whoever enters the house while it is shut up shall be unclean until the evening, 47and whoever sleeps in the house bkshall wash his clothes, and whoever eats in the house shall wash his clothes.

48“But if the priest comes and looks, and if the disease has not spread in the house after the house was plastered, then the priest shall pronounce the house clean, for the disease is healed. 49And for the blcleansing of the house he shall take bmtwo small birds, with cedarwood and scarlet yarn and hyssop, 50and shall kill one of the birds in an earthenware vessel over fresh water 51and shall take the cedarwood and the hyssop and the scarlet yarn, along with the live bird, and dip them in the blood of the bird that was killed and in the fresh water and sprinkle the house seven times. 52Thus he shall cleanse the house with the blood of the bird and with the fresh water and with the live bird and with the cedarwood and hyssop and scarlet yarn. 53And he shall let the live bird go out of the city bninto the open country. So he shall bomake atonement for the house, and it shall be clean.”

54This is the law for any case of leprous disease: for bpan itch, 55for bqleprous disease in a garment or in bra house, 56and bsfor a swelling or an eruption or a spot, 57to btshow when it is unclean and when it is clean. This is the law for leprous disease.

Numbers 12:10-15

10When the cloud removed from over the tent, behold, buMiriam was bvleprous,

like snow. And Aaron turned toward Miriam, and behold, she was leprous.
11And Aaron said to Moses, “Oh, my lord, bxdo not punish us
Hebrew  do not lay sin upon us
because we have done foolishly and have sinned.
12Let her not be as one dead, whose flesh is half eaten away when he comes out of his mother’s womb.” 13And Moses cried to the Lord, “O God, please heal her—please.” 14But the Lord said to Moses, “If her father had but bzspit in her face, should she not be shamed seven days? Let her be cashut outside the camp seven days, and after that she may be brought in again.” 15So Miriam cbwas shut outside the camp seven days, and the people did not set out on the march till Miriam was brought in again.

Deuteronomy 24:8-9

8“Take care, in cca case of leprous
Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases; see Leviticus 13
disease, to be very careful to do according to all that the Levitical priests shall direct you. As I commanded them, so you shall be careful to do.
9Remember what the Lord your God did to ceMiriam cfon the way as you came out of Egypt.

2 Samuel 3:29

29 cgMay it fall upon the head of Joab and upon all his father’s house, and may the house of Joab never be without chone who has a discharge or who is cileprous or who holds a spindle or who falls by the sword or who lacks bread!”

2 Kings 5:5-27

5And the king of Syria said, “Go now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel.”

So he went, cjtaking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels
A  talent was about 75 pounds or 34 kilograms; a  shekel was about 2/5 ounce or 11 grams
of gold, and ten clchanges of clothing.
6And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, which read, “When this letter reaches you, know that I have sent to you Naaman my servant, that you may cure him of his leprosy.” 7And when the king of Israel read the letter, cmhe tore his clothes and said, cn“Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man sends word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? Only coconsider, and see how he is seeking a quarrel with me.”

8But when Elisha the cpman of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent to the king, saying, “Why have you torn your clothes? Let him come now to me, that he may know that there is a prophet in Israel.” 9So Naaman came with his horses and chariots and stood at the door of Elisha’s house. 10And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, cqGo and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored, and you shall be clean.” 11But Naaman was angry and went away, saying, “Behold, I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call upon the name of the Lord his God, and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper. 12Are not Abana
Or Amana
and Pharpar, the rivers of csDamascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?” So he turned and went away in a rage.
13But his servants came near and said to him, ct“My father, it is a great word the prophet has spoken to you; will you not do it? Has he actually said to you, ‘Wash, and be clean’?” 14So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God, cuand his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, cvand he was clean.

Gehazi’s Greed and Punishment

15Then he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and he came and stood before him. And he said, “Behold, I know that cwthere is no God in all the earth but in Israel; so cxaccept now a present from your servant.” 16But he said, cy“As the Lord lives, before whom I stand, czI will receive none.” And he urged him to take it, but he refused. 17Then Naaman said, “If not, please let there be given to your servant two mule loads of earth, for from now on your servant will not offer burnt offering or sacrifice to any god but the Lord. 18In this matter may the Lord pardon your servant: when my master goes into the house of daRimmon to worship there, dbleaning on my arm, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, when I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, the Lord pardon your servant in this matter.” 19He said to him, dcGo in peace.”

But when Naaman had gone from him a short distance,
20 ddGehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, “See, my master has spared this Naaman the Syrian, in not accepting from his hand what he brought. deAs the Lord lives, I will run after him and get something from him.” 21So Gehazi followed Naaman. And when Naaman saw someone running after him, he got down from the chariot to meet him and said, df“Is all well?” 22And he said, “All is well. My master has sent me to say, ‘There have just now come to me from dgthe hill country of Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets. Please give them a talent of silver and dhtwo changes of clothing.’” 23And Naaman said, di“Be pleased to accept two talents.” And he urged him and tied up two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of clothing, and laid them on two of his servants. And they carried them before Gehazi. 24And when he came to the hill, he took them from their hand and put them in the house, and he sent the men away, and they departed. 25He went in and stood before his master, and Elisha said to him, “Where have you been, Gehazi?” And he said, “Your servant went nowhere.” 26But he said to him, “Did not my heart go when the man turned from his chariot to meet you? Was it a time to accept money and garments, olive orchards and vineyards, sheep and oxen, male servants and female servants? 27Therefore the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and to your descendants forever.” So he went out from his presence dja leper, like snow.
