Luke 11

The Lord’s Prayer

1Now Jesus
Greek he
was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, bas John taught his disciples.”
2And he said to them, cWhen you pray, say:

dFather, ehallowed be fyour name.
gYour kingdom come.
3 hGive us ieach day our daily bread,
Or  our bread for tomorrow

4and kforgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And llead us not into temptation.”
5And he said to them, Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? 8I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything mbecause he is his friend, yet because of his impudence
Or persistence
he will rise and give him whatever he needs.
9And I tell you, oask, and pit will be given to you; qseek, and you will find; rknock, and it will be opened to you. 10For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 11What father among you, if his son asks for
Some manuscripts insert bread, will give him a stone; or if he asks for
a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent;
12or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13If you then, twho are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father ugive the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Jesus and Beelzebul

14 vNow he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled. 15But some of them said, “He casts out demons wby Beelzebul, the prince of demons,” 16while others, xto test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven. 17 yBut he, zknowing their thoughts, said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. 18And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. 19And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, aaby whom do abyour sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 20But if it is by acthe finger of God that I cast out demons, then adthe kingdom of God has come upon you. 21When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe; 22 aebut when one stronger than he attacks him and afovercomes him, he takes away his agarmor in which he trusted and ahdivides his spoil. 23 aiWhoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

Return of an Unclean Spirit

24 ajWhen the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through akwaterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order. 26Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And althe last state of that person is worse than the first.”

True Blessedness

27As he said these things, ama woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, anBlessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” 28But he said, aoBlessed rather are those apwho hear the word of God and aqkeep it!”

The Sign of Jonah

29 arWhen the crowds were increasing, he began to say, asThis generation is an evil generation. atIt seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30For as auJonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 avThe queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and awcondemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, axsomething greater than Solomon is here. 32 ayThe men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and azcondemn it, for bathey repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, bbsomething greater than Jonah is here.

The Light in You

33 bc“No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34Your eye is bdthe lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bebad, your body is full of darkness. 35 bfTherefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. 36If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, bgas when a lamp with its rays gives you light.”

Woes to the Pharisees and Lawyers

37While Jesus
Greek he
was speaking, bia Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table.
38The Pharisee was astonished to see bjthat he did not first wash before dinner. 39And the Lord said to him, bkNow you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of blgreed and wickedness. 40 bmYou fools! bnDid not he who made the outside make the inside also? 41But bogive as alms those things that are within, and behold, bpeverything is clean for you.

42 bqBut woe to you Pharisees! For bryou tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect bsjustice and btthe love of God. buThese you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 43Woe to you Pharisees! For bvyou love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44Woe to you! bwFor you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”

45One of bxthe lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.” 46And he said, Woe to you bylawyers also! For bzyou load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 caWoe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. 48 cbSo you are witnesses and you ccconsent to the deeds of cdyour fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs. 49Therefore also cethe Wisdom of God said, cf‘I will send them cgprophets and apostles, chsome of whom they will cikill and persecute,’ 50so that cjthe blood of all the prophets, shed ckfrom the foundation of the world, may be clcharged against this generation, 51from the blood of cmAbel to the blood of cnZechariah, who perished between cothe altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be cprequired of this generation. 52Woe to you cqlawyers! crFor you have taken away the key of csknowledge. You ctdid not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”

53As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, 54 culying in wait for him, cvto catch him in something he might say.

Luke 20

The Authority of Jesus Challenged

1 cwOne day, cxas Jesus
Greek he
was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, czthe chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up
2and said to him, “Tell us daby what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority.” 3He answered them, “I also will ask you a question. Now tell me, 4was the baptism of John dbfrom heaven or from man?” 5And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, dcWhy did you not believe him?’ 6But if we say, ‘From man,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was dda prophet.” 7So they answered that they did not know where it came from. 8And Jesus said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

The Parable of the Wicked Tenants

9 deAnd he began to tell the people this parable: A man planted dfa vineyard and dglet it out to tenants and dhwent into another country for a long while. 10When the time came, he sent a servant
Greek bondservant; also verse 11
to the tenants, so that djthey would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. dkBut the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
11 dlAnd dmhe sent another servant. But they also beat and dntreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 doAnd he sent yet a third. This one also they wounded and cast out. 13Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my dpbeloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’ 14But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, dqThis is the heir. drLet us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.’ 15And they dsthrew him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 dtHe will ducome and destroy those tenants and dvgive the vineyard to others.” When they heard this, they said, “Surely not!” 17But he dwlooked directly at them and said, What then is this that is written:

dx“‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone’?
Greek  the head of the corner

18 dzEveryone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls eaon anyone, it will crush him.”

Paying Taxes to Caesar

19 ebThe scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, for they perceived that he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people. 20 ecSo they edwatched him and sent spies, who eepretended to be sincere, that they might efcatch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of egthe governor. 21So they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and ehshow no partiality,
Greek  and do not receive a face
but truly teach ejthe way of God.
22Is it lawful for us to give ektribute to elCaesar, or not?” 23But he perceived their emcraftiness, and said to them, 24Show me ena denarius.
A  denarius was a day’s wage for a laborer
Whose likeness and inscription does it have?”
They said, “Caesar’s.”
25He said to them, Then eprender to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 26And they were not able in the presence of the people eqto catch him in what he said, but marveling at his answer they became silent.

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

27There came to him ersome Sadducees, esthose who deny that there is a resurrection, 28and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us etthat if a man’s brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man
Greek his brother
must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.
29Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children. 30And the second 31and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. 32Afterward the woman also died. 33In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife.”

34And Jesus said to them, ev“The sons of this age ewmarry and exare given in marriage, 35but those who are eyconsidered worthy to attain to ezthat age and to the resurrection from the dead faneither marry fbnor are given in marriage, 36for fcthey cannot die anymore, because they are fdequal to angels and feare ffsons of God, being fgsons
Greek huioi; see Preface
of the resurrection.
37But that the dead are raised, fieven Moses showed, in fjthe passage about the bush, where he calls fkthe Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. 38Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all fllive to him.” 39Then some of the scribes fmanswered, “Teacher, you have spoken well.” 40For fnthey no longer dared to ask him any question.

Whose Son Is the Christ?

41 foBut he said to them, How can they say that fpthe Christ is fqDavid’s son? 42For David himself says in the Book of Psalms,

fr“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at my right hand,
43until I make your enemies fsyour footstool.”’
44David thus calls him Lord, so fthow is he his son?”

Beware of the Scribes

45 fuAnd in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, 46Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and fvthe places of honor at feasts, 47 fwwho devour widowshouses and fxfor a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
