Luke 20:13-19

13Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my abeloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’ 14But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, bThis is the heir. cLet us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.’ 15And they dthrew him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 eHe will fcome and destroy those tenants and ggive the vineyard to others.” When they heard this, they said, “Surely not!” 17But he hlooked directly at them and said, What then is this that is written:

i“‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone’?
Greek  the head of the corner

18 kEveryone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls lon anyone, it will crush him.”

Paying Taxes to Caesar

19 mThe scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, for they perceived that he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people.

Luke 22:2-6

2And the chief priests and the scribes nwere seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people.

Judas to Betray Jesus

3 oThen pSatan entered into qJudas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. 4He went away and conferred with the chief priests and rofficers how he might betray him to them. 5And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. 6So he consented and sought an opportunity to sbetray him to them in the absence of a crowd.

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 tWhile he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called uJudas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, 48but Jesus said to him, Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike vwith the sword?” 50And one of them struck the servant
Greek bondservant
of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
51But Jesus said, No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him. 52Then Jesus said to the chief priests and xofficers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?

Jesus Is Mocked

63 yNow the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. 64 zThey also blindfolded him and kept asking him, aaProphesy! abWho is it that struck you?” 65And they said many other things against him, acblaspheming him.

Jesus Before the Council

66 adWhen day came, aethe assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their afcouncil, and they agsaid, 67 ahIf you are aithe Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, If I tell you, you will not believe, 68and if I ask you, you will not answer. 69But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated ajat the right hand of the power of God.” 70So they all said, “Are you akthe Son of God, then?” And he said to them, alYou say that I am.” 71Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

1When Jesus had spoken these words, bbhe went out with his disciples across bcthe brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. 2Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew bdthe place, for beJesus often met there with his disciples. 3 bfSo Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4Then Jesus, bgknowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, bhWhom do you seek?” 5They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, I am he.”
Greek  I am; also verses 6, 8
Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.
6 bjWhen Jesus
Greek he
said to them, I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7So he asked them again, blWhom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 8Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.” 9 bmThis was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.” 10Then Simon Peter, bnhaving a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant
Greek bondservant; twice in this verse
and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
11So Jesus said to Peter, Put your sword into its sheath; bpshall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”

Jesus Faces Annas and Caiaphas

12So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews
Greek Ioudaioi probably refers here to Jewish religious leaders, and others under their influence, in that time; also verses 14, 31, 36, 38
arrested Jesus and bound him.
13First they brled him to bsAnnas, for he was the father-in-law of btCaiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews buthat it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.

John 18:19-24

The High Priest Questions Jesus

19 bvThe high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. 20Jesus answered him, I have spoken bwopenly bxto the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. byI have said nothing in secret. 21Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.” 22When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, bz“Is that how you answer the high priest?” 23Jesus answered him, If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?” 24 caAnnas then sent him bound to cbCaiaphas the high priest.
