Luke 4

The Temptation of Jesus

1 aAnd Jesus, bfull of the Holy Spirit, creturned from the Jordan and was led dby the Spirit in the wilderness 2for eforty days, fbeing tempted by the devil. gAnd he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, hhe was hungry. 3The devil said to him, “If you are ithe Son of God, command jthis stone to become bread.” 4And Jesus answered him, k“It is written, lMan shall not live by bread alone.’” 5 mAnd the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 6and said to him, “To you nI will give all this authority and their glory, ofor it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 7If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” 8And Jesus answered him, p“It is written,

q“‘You shall worship the Lord your God,
and rhim only shall you serve.’”
9 sAnd he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are tthe Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10for it is written,

u“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
to guard you,’
11and

v“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
12And Jesus answered him, “It is said, w‘You shall not xput the Lord your God to the test.’” 13And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him yuntil an opportune time.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

14 zAnd Jesus returned aain the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and aba report about him went out through all the surrounding country. 15And ache taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

16 adAnd he came to aeNazareth, where he had been brought up. And afas was his custom, aghe went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up ahto read. 17And aithe scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

18 aj“The Spirit of the Lord akis upon me,
because he has anointed me
to alproclaim good news to the poor.
amHe has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and anrecovering of sight to the blind,
aoto set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 apto proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
20And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and aqsat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were arfixed on him. 21And he began to say to them, Today asthis Scripture athas been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22And all spoke well of him and marveled at authe gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, avIs not this awJoseph’s son?” 23And he said to them, Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, axPhysician, heal yourself.’ What we have heard you did ayat Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.” 24And he said, Truly, I say to you, azno prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when bathe heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26and Elijah was sent to none of them bbbut only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27And bcthere were many lepers
Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases; see Leviticus 13
in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, bebut only Naaman the Syrian.”
28When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29And they rose up and bfdrove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30But bgpassing through their midst, he went away.

Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Demon

31 bhAnd he biwent down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And bjhe was teaching them bkon the Sabbath, 32and blthey were astonished at his teaching, bmfor his word possessed authority. 33And bnin the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34Ha!
Or Leave us alone
bpWhat have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? bqI know who you arebrthe Holy One of God.”
35But Jesus bsrebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 36And btthey were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? buFor with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37And bvreports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

Jesus Heals Many

38 bwAnd he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now bxSimon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39And he stood over her and byrebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.

40Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and bzhe laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 caAnd demons also came out of many, cbcrying, “You are ccthe Son of God!” But he rebuked them and cdwould not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was cethe Christ.

Jesus Preaches in Synagogues

42 cfAnd when it was day, he departed and went cginto a desolate place. And chthe people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, 43but he said to them, ciI must cjpreach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” 44And he was preaching ckin the synagogues of Judea.

Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two

1After this the Lord appointed cmseventy-two

others and cosent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go.
2 cpAnd he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. cqTherefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3Go your way; crbehold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 csCarry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and ctgreet no one on the road. 5Whatever house you enter, first say, cuPeace be to this house!’ 6And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, cvit will return to you. 7And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for cwthe laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. 9Heal the sick in it and say to them, cx‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, 11 cyEven the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that czthe kingdom of God has come near.’ 12I tell you, dait will be more bearable on dbthat day for Sodom than for that town.

Woe to Unrepentant Cities

13 dcWoe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in ddTyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 deBut it will be more bearable in the judgment for dfTyre and Sidon than for you. 15And you, Capernaum, dgwill you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to dhHades.

16 di“The one who hears you hears me, and djthe one who rejects you rejects me, and dkthe one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

The Return of the Seventy-Two

17 dlThe seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, dmeven the demons are subject to us in your name!” 18And he said to them, dn“I saw Satan dofall like lightning from heaven. 19Behold, I have given you authority dpto tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of dqthe enemy, and drnothing shall hurt you. 20 dsNevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that dtyour names are written in heaven.”

Jesus Rejoices in the Father’s Will

21 duIn that same hour dvhe rejoiced dwin the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, dxLord of heaven and earth, that dyyou have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and dzrevealed them to little children; yes, Father, for easuch was your gracious will.
Or  for so it pleased you well
22 ecAll things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is edexcept the Father, or who the Father is eeexcept the Son and anyone efto whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

23Then turning to the disciples he said privately, egBlessed are the eyes that see what you see! 24For I tell you ehthat many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25 eiAnd behold, a ejlawyer stood up to ekput him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to elinherit eternal life?” 26He said to him, What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27And he answered, em“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and enyour neighbor as yourself.” 28And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; eodo this, and you will live.”

29But he, epdesiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30Jesus replied, A man eqwas going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31Now by chance a erpriest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32So likewise esa Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a etSamaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34He went to him and eubound up his wounds, pouring on evoil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35And the next day he took out two ewdenarii
A  denarius was a day’s wage for a laborer
and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’
36Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, You go, and do likewise.”

Martha and Mary

39And she had a sister called fbMary, who fcsat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. 40But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41But the Lord answered her, Martha, Martha, you are fdanxious and troubled about many things, 42but one thing is necessary.
