Luke 4:16

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

16 aAnd he came to bNazareth, where he had been brought up. And cas was his custom, dhe went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up eto read.

Acts 13:14-52

14but they went on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia. And fon the Sabbath day gthey went into the synagogue and sat down. 15After hthe reading from ithe Law and the Prophets, jthe rulers of the synagogue sent a message to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have any kword of encouragement for the people, say it.” 16So Paul stood up, and lmotioning with his hand said:

Men of Israel and myou who fear God, listen.
17 nThe God of this people Israel ochose our fathers and pmade the people great qduring their stay in the land of Egypt, and rwith uplifted arm he led them out of it. 18And for about sforty years the put up with
Some manuscripts  he carried (compare Deuteronomy 1:31)
them in the wilderness.
19And vafter destroying wseven nations in the land of Canaan, xhe gave them their land as an inheritance. 20All this took about 450 years. And after that yhe gave them judges until zSamuel the prophet. 21Then aathey asked for a king, and God gave them Saul abthe son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22And acwhen he had removed him, adhe raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ae‘I have found in David the son of Jesse afa man after my heart, agwho will do all my will.’ 23 ahOf this man’s offspring God has brought to Israel aia Savior, Jesus, ajas he promised. 24Before his coming, akJohn had proclaimed ala baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25And as John was finishing his course, amhe said, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but behold, after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’

26Brothers, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you anwho fear God, to us has been sent aothe message of apthis salvation. 27For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because aqthey did not recognize him nor understand arthe utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath, asfulfilled them by condemning him. 28And atthough they found in him no guilt worthy of death, authey asked Pilate to have him executed. 29And when avthey had carried out all that was written of him, awthey took him down from axthe tree and laid him in a tomb. 30But ayGod raised him from the dead, 31and for many days azhe appeared to those bawho had come up with him bbfrom Galilee to Jerusalem, bcwho are now bdhis witnesses to the people. 32And we bring you the good news bethat what God promised to the fathers, 33 bfthis he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm,

bg“‘You are my Son,
today I have begotten you.’
34And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, bh, bino more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way,

“‘I will give you bjthe holy and sure blessings of David.’
35Therefore he says also in another psalm,

bk“‘You will not let your Holy One see corruption.’
36For David, after he had blserved the purpose of God in his own generation, bmfell asleep and bnwas laid with his fathers and saw corruption, 37but he whom boGod raised up did not see corruption. 38Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, bpthat through this man bqforgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39and by him breveryone who believes is freed
Greek justified; twice in this verse
from everything btfrom which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.
40Beware, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets should come about:

41 bu“‘Look, you scoffers,
be astounded and perish;
for I am doing a work in your days,
a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.’”
42As they went out, the people begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath. 43And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and bvdevout bwconverts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who, as they spoke with them, urged them bxto continue in bythe grace of God.

44The next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 bzBut cawhen the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with cbjealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul, ccreviling him. 46And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, “It was necessary that the word of God cdbe spoken first to you. ceSince you thrust it aside and judge yourselves cfunworthy of eternal life, behold, we cgare turning to the Gentiles. 47 chFor so the Lord has commanded us, saying,

ci“‘I have made you cja light for the Gentiles,
that you may ckbring salvation to the ends of the earth.’”
48And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and clglorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed. 49And the word of the Lord was spreading throughout the whole region. 50 cmBut the Jews
Greek Ioudaioi probably refers here to Jewish religious leaders, and others under their influence, in that time
incited the devout cowomen of high standing and the leading men of the city, cpstirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and cqdrove them out of their district.
51But they crshook off the dust from their feet against them and went to Iconium. 52And the disciples were filled cswith joy and ctwith the Holy Spirit.

Acts 14:1

Paul and Barnabas at Iconium

1Now at Iconium cuthey entered together into the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.

Acts 17:1-3

Paul and Silas in Thessalonica

1Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to cvThessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 2And Paul went in, cwas was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them cxfrom the Scriptures, 3 cyexplaining and proving that it was necessary for czthe Christ to suffer and dato rise from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.”

Acts 17:11

11Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, dbexamining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

Acts 17:17

17So dche reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there.

Acts 19:8

8And ddhe entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them deabout the kingdom of God.
