4 iJohn appeared, baptizing in jthe wilderness and proclaiming ka baptism of lrepentance mfor the forgiveness of sins. 5And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, nconfessing their sins. 6Now John was oclothed with camel’s hair and pwore a leather belt around his waist and ate qlocusts and rwild honey. 7And he preached, saying, sAfter me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 tI have baptized you with water, but uhe will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

15for he will be vgreat before the Lord. And whe must not drink wine or strong xdrink, and yhe will be zfilled with the Holy Spirit, aaeven from his mother’s womb. 16And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God, 17and abhe will go before him acin the spirit and power of Elijah, adto turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and aethe disobedient to the wisdom of the just, afto make ready for the Lord a people prepared.”

76And you, child, will be called agthe prophet of ahthe Most High;

Luke 3:2-20

2during ajthe high priesthood of Annas and akCaiaphas, althe word of God came to amJohn the son of Zechariah in anthe wilderness. 3And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming aoa baptism of repentance apfor the forgiveness of sins. 4As it is written in aqthe book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,

ar“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
asPrepare the way of the Lord,
Or  crying, Prepare in the wilderness the way of the Lord

make his paths straight.
5 auEvery valley shall be filled,
avand every mountain and hill shall be made low,
awand the crooked shall become straight,
and the rough places shall become level ways,
6 axand all flesh shall see aythe salvation of God.’”
7He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, az“You brood of bavipers! Who warned you to flee from bbthe wrath to come? 8Bear fruits bcin keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, bd‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from bethese stones to raise up children for Abraham. 9Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. bfEvery tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10And the crowds asked him, bgWhat then shall we do?” 11And he answered them, bh“Whoever has two tunics
Greek chiton, a long garment worn under the cloak next to the skin
is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”
12 bjTax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, bkwhat shall we do?” 13And he said to them, blCollect no more than you are authorized to do.” 14Soldiers also asked him, “And we, bmwhat shall we do?” And he said to them, bn“Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your bowages.”

15As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, bpwhether he might be bqthe Christ, 16 brJohn answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but bshe who is mightier than I is coming, btthe strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you buwith the Holy Spirit and bvfire. 17His bwwinnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to bxgather the wheat into his barn, bybut the chaff he will burn with bzunquenchable fire.”

18So cawith many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. 19But cbHerod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, 20added this to them all, that cche locked up John in prison.
