18 And ^aSadducees came to him, ^bwho say that there is no resurrection. And they asked him a question, saying, 19 “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that ^cif a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man ^{▼▼Greek his brother} must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 20 There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no offspring. 21 And the second took her, and died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. 22 And the seven left no offspring. Last of all the woman also died. 23 In the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.”

24 Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are wrong, because ^eyou know neither the Scriptures nor ^fthe power of God? 25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither ^gmarry nor ^hare given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 26 And as for the dead being raised, ⁱhave you not read in ^jthe book of Moses, in ^kthe passage about the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ^l‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? 27 He is not God of the dead, but of the living. You are quite wrong.”

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

27 There came to him ^msome Sadducees, ⁿthose who deny that there is a resurrection, 28 and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us ^othat if a man’s brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man ^{▼▼Greek his brother} must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children. 30 And the second 31 and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. 32 Afterward the woman also died. 33 In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife.”

34 And Jesus said to them, ^q“The sons of this age ^rmarry and ^sare given in marriage, 35 but those who are ^tconsidered worthy to attain to ^uthat age and to the resurrection from the dead ^vneither marry ^wnor are given in marriage, 36 for ^xthey cannot die anymore, because they are ^yequal to angels and ^zare ^aasons of God, being ^absons ^{▼▼Greek huioi; see Preface} of the resurrection. 37 But that the dead are raised, ^adeven Moses showed, in ^aethe passage about the bush, where he calls ^afthe Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. 38 Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all ^aglive to him.” 39 Then some of the scribes ^ahanswered, “Teacher, you have spoken well.” 40 For ^aithey no longer dared to ask him any question.
