33 ^aBe on guard, ^bkeep awake. ^{▼▼Some manuscripts add and pray} For you do not know when the time will come. 34 ^dIt is like a man ^egoing on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants ^{▼▼Greek bondservants} in charge, ^geach with his work, and commands ^hthe doorkeeper to stay awake. 35 ⁱTherefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, ^jin the evening, or ^kat midnight, or ^lwhen the rooster crows, ^{▼▼That is, the third watch of the night, between midnight and 3 a.m.} or ⁿin the morning— 36 lest ^ohe come suddenly and ^pfind you asleep. 37 And what I say to you I say to all: ^qStay awake.”

You Must Be Ready

35 ^r“Stay dressed for action ^{▼▼Greek Let your loins stay girded; compare Exodus 12:11} and ^tkeep your lamps burning, 36 and be like men who are ^uwaiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and ^vknocks.

Luke 12:40-46

40 You also must be ^wready, for ^xthe Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

41 Peter said, “Lord, ^yare you telling this parable for us or for all?” 42 And the Lord said, “Who then is ^zthe faithful and ^aawise ^abmanager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? 43 ^acBlessed is that servant ^{▼▼Greek bondservant; also verses 45, 46, 47} whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 44 Truly, I say to you, ^aehe will set him over all his possessions. 45 But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master ^afis delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and ^agget drunk, 46 the master of that servant will come ^ahon a day when he does not expect him and ^aiat an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful.
