Mark 13:4-37

4Tell us, awhen will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?” 5And Jesus began to say to them, bSee that no one leads you astray. 6 cMany will come in my name, saying, dI am he!’ and they will lead many astray. 7And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, edo not be alarmed. This fmust take place, but the end is not yet. 8For gnation will rise against nation, and hkingdom against kingdom. There will be iearthquakes in various places; there will be jfamines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.

9 kBut lbe on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten min synagogues, and you will stand before ngovernors and okings for my sake, pto bear witness before them. 10And the gospel must first be proclaimed qto all nations. 11And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, rdo not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say swhatever is given you in that hour, tfor it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. 12 uAnd brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. 13 vAnd you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. wBut the one who endures to the end will be saved.

The Abomination of Desolation

14But when you see xthe abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be ( ylet the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 zLet the one who is on aathe housetop not go down, nor enter his house, to take anything out, 16and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 17And abalas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! 18Pray that it may not happen in winter. 19For in those days there will be acsuch adtribulation as has not been aefrom the beginning of the creation that afGod created until now, and never will be. 20And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved. But for agthe sake of the elect, whom ahhe chose, he shortened the days. 21And aithen if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ orLook, there he is!’ do not believe it. 22 ajFor false christs and false prophets will arise and akperform signs and wonders, alto lead astray, if possible, amthe elect. 23But anbe on guard; aoI have told you all things beforehand.

The Coming of the Son of Man

24But in those days, after apthat tribulation, aqthe sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, 25and arthe stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 26And then they will see asthe Son of Man coming in clouds atwith great power and glory. 27And then auhe will send out the angels and avgather awhis elect from axthe four winds, from aythe ends of the earth azto the ends of heaven.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

28From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, baat the very gates. 30 bbTruly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 31 bcHeaven and earth will pass away, but bdmy words will not pass away.

No One Knows That Day or Hour

32But concerning that day or that hour, beno one knows, not even the angels in heaven, bfnor the Son, bgbut only the Father. 33 bhBe on guard, bikeep awake.
Some manuscripts add and pray
For you do not know when the time will come.
34 bkIt is like a man blgoing on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants
Greek bondservants
in charge, bneach with his work, and commands bothe doorkeeper to stay awake.
35 bpTherefore stay awakefor you do not know when the master of the house will come, bqin the evening, or brat midnight, or bswhen the rooster crows,
That is, the third watch of the night, between midnight and 3 a.m.
or buin the morning
36lest bvhe come suddenly and bwfind you asleep. 37And what I say to you I say to all: bxStay awake.”
