And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And he took with him ^cPeter and James and John, and began ^dto be greatly distressed and troubled. 34 And he said to them, ^e“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and ^fwatch.” ^{▼▼Or keep awake; also verses 37, 38} 35 And going a little farther, he fell on the ground ^hand prayed that, if it were possible, ⁱthe hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, ^j“Abba, Father, ^kall things are possible for you. Remove ^lthis cup from me. ^mYet not what I will, but what you will.” 37 And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? 38 ⁿWatch and ^opray that you may not ^penter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 And again he went away and prayed, ^qsaying the same words. 40 And again he came and found them sleeping, for ^rtheir eyes were very heavy, and ^sthey did not know what to answer him. 41 And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? ^tIt is enough; ^uthe hour has come. ^vThe Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

39 ^wAnd he came out and went, ^xas was his custom, to ^ythe Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 ^zAnd when he came to ^aathe place, he said to them, ^ab“Pray that you may not ^acenter into temptation.” 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and ^adknelt down and prayed, 42 saying, ^ae“Father, if you are willing, remove ^afthis cup from me. ^agNevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” 43 And there appeared to him ^ahan angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And ^aibeing in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. ^{▼▼Some manuscripts omit verses 43 and 44} 45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and ^akpray that you may not enter into temptation.”
