Jesus Is Mocked

16 ^aAnd the soldiers led him away inside ^bthe palace (that is, ^cthe governor’s headquarters), ^{▼▼Greek the praetorium} and they called together the whole ^ebattalion. ^{▼▼Greek cohort; a tenth of a Roman legion, usually about 600 men} 17 And they clothed him in ^ga purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, ^h“Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were striking his head with a reed and ⁱspitting on him and ^jkneeling down in homage to him. 20 And when they had ^kmocked him, they stripped him of ^lthe purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they ^mled him out to crucify him.

21 ⁿAnd they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22 ^oAnd they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull).

26 ^pAnd as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus. 27 And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were ^qmourning and lamenting for him. 28 But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For behold, ^rthe days are coming when they will say, ^s‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30 ^tThen they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 For ^uif they do these things when ^vthe wood is green, what will happen ^wwhen it is dry?”
