38 And ^athe curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 ^bAnd when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he ^{▼▼Some manuscripts insert cried out and} breathed his last, he said, ^d“Truly this man was the Son ^{▼▼Or a son} of God!”

40 There were also ^fwomen looking on ^gfrom a distance, among whom were ^hMary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and ⁱSalome. 41 When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ^jministered to him, and there were also many other women who ^kcame up with him to Jerusalem.

Jesus Is Buried

42 ^lAnd when evening had come, since it was ^mthe day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, ⁿa respected member of the council, who ^owas also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. ^{▼▼Or Pilate wondered whether he had already died} And summoning ^qthe centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. 45 And when he learned from ^rthe centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. 46 And Joseph ^{▼▼Greek he} bought ^ta linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and ^ulaid him in a tomb ^vthat had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled ^wa stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 ^xMary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.

Luke 23:47-56

47 Now ^ywhen the centurion saw what had taken place, ^zhe praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!” 48 And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home ^aabeating their breasts. 49 And all ^abhis acquaintances and ^acthe women who had followed him from Galilee ^adstood at a distance watching these things.

50 ^aeNow there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action; and he ^afwas looking for the kingdom of God. 52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and ^aglaid him in a tomb cut in stone, ^ahwhere no one had ever yet been laid. 54 It was the day of ^aiPreparation, and the Sabbath was beginning. ^{▼▼Greek was dawning} 55 ^akThe women ^alwho had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. 56 Then they returned and ^amprepared spices and ointments.

On the Sabbath they rested ^anaccording to the commandment.

John 19:31-42

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced

31 Since it was ^aothe day of Preparation, and ^apso that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was ^aqa high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other ^arwho had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out ^asblood and water. 35 ^atHe who saw it has borne witness— ^auhis testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth— ^avthat you also may believe. 36 ^awFor these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: ^ax“Not one of his bones ^aywill be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, ^az“They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

38 ^baAfter these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly ^bbfor fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 ^bcNicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus ^{▼▼Greek him} by night, came ^bebringing a mixture of ^bfmyrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds ^{▼▼Greek one hundred litras; a litra (or Roman pound) was equal to about 11 1/2 ounces or 327 grams} in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and ^bhbound it in ^bilinen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a ^bjgarden, and ^bkin the garden a new tomb ^blin which no one had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish ^bmday of Preparation, ^bnsince the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.
