Mark 6:32-44

32 ^aAnd they went away in ^bthe boat to a desolate place by themselves. 33 Now many saw them going and ^crecognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When he went ashore he ^dsaw a great crowd, and ^ehe had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things. 35 And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. 36 ^fSend them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” 37 But he answered them, ^g“You give them something to eat.” And ^hthey said to him, ⁱ“Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii ^{▼▼A denarius was a day’s wage for a laborer} worth of bread and give it to them to eat?” 38 And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, ^k“Five, and two fish.” 39 Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties. 41 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he ^llooked up to heaven and ^msaid a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all. 42 And they all ate and were satisfied. 43 And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. 44 And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

10 On their return ⁿthe apostles told him all that they had done. ^oAnd he took them and withdrew apart to a town called Bethsaida. 11 When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he ^pwelcomed them and ^qspoke to them of the kingdom of God and ^rcured those who had need of healing. 12 Now ^sthe day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, ^t“Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.” 13 But he said to them, ^u“You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than ^vfive loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” 14 For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 And they did so, and had them all sit down. 16 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, ^whe looked up to heaven and ^xsaid a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17 And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.
