Mark 8:33-38

33But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, aGet behind me, Satan! For you bare not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

34And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him cdeny himself and dtake up his cross and follow me. 35For ewhoever would save his life
The same Greek word can mean either soul or  life, depending on the context; twice in this verse and once in verse 36 and once in verse 37
will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake gand the gospel’s will save it.
36 hFor what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37For iwhat can a man give in return for his soul? 38For jwhoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this kadulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed lwhen he comes in the glory of his Father with mthe holy angels.”

Luke 9:22-26

22 nsaying, o“The Son of Man must psuffer many things and qbe rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on rthe third day be raised.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

23And he said to all, If anyone would come after me, let him sdeny himself and ttake up his cross udaily and follow me. 24For vwhoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 wFor what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? 26For xwhoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed ywhen he comes in zhis glory and the glory of the Father and of aathe holy angels.
