John 16:1-19

1“I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. 2 kThey will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, lthe hour is coming when mwhoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. 3And they will do these things nbecause they have not known the Father, nor me. 4But oI have said these things to you, that when ptheir hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, qbecause I was with you.
5But now rI am going to him who sent me, and snone of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6But because I have said these things to you, tsorrow has filled your heart. 7Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for uif I do not go away, vthe Helper will not come to you. But wif xI go, yI will send him to you. 8 zAnd when he comes, he will aaconvict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9concerning sin, abbecause they do not believe in me; 10 acconcerning righteousness, adbecause I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 aeconcerning judgment, because the ruler of this world afis judged.

12“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13When agthe Spirit of truth comes, ahhe will aiguide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but ajwhatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14He will akglorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 alAll that the Father has is mine; amtherefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

16 an“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and aoagain a little while, and you will see me.” 17So apsome of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, aq‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, arbecause I am going to the Father?” 18So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while? asWe do not know what he is talking about.” 19 atJesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’?
