2 ^dAbraham was the father of Isaac, and ^eIsaac the father of Jacob, and ^fJacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3 and ^gJudah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, ^{▼▼Greek Aram; also verse 4} 4 and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by ⁱRahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and ^jJesse the father of David the king.

And ^kDavid was the father of Solomon by ^lthe wife of Uriah, 7 and ^mSolomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, ^{▼▼ Asaph is probably an alternate spelling of Asa; some manuscripts Asa; also verse 8} 8 and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, ^oand Joram the father of Uzziah, 9 and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10 and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, ^{▼▼ Amos is probably an alternate spelling of Amon; some manuscripts Amon; twice in this verse} and Amos the father of Josiah, 11 and ^qJosiah the father of ^rJechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.

12 And after the deportation to Babylon: ^sJechoniah was the father of ^tShealtiel, ^{▼▼Greek Salathiel; twice in this verse} and ^vShealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, 15 and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 and Jacob the father of ^wJoseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to ^xthe Christ fourteen generations.

Luke 1:26-35

Birth of Jesus Foretold

26 In the sixth month the angel ^yGabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named ^zNazareth, 27 ^aato a virgin betrothed ^{▼▼That is, legally pledged to be married} to a man whose name was Joseph, ^acof the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, ^adO favored one, ^aethe Lord is with you!” ^{▼▼Some manuscripts add Blessed are you among women!} 29 But ^agshe was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for ^ahyou have found favor with God. 31 And behold, ^aiyou will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and ^ajyou shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of ^akthe Most High. And the Lord God ^alwill give to him the throne of ^amhis father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob ^anforever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” ^{▼▼Greek since I do not know a man}

35 And the angel answered her, ^ap“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of ^aqthe Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born ^{▼▼Some manuscripts add of you} will be called ^asholy— ^atthe Son of God.

Luke 2:1-7

The Birth of Jesus Christ

1 In those days ^aua decree went out from ^avCaesar Augustus that all the world should be ^awregistered. 2 This was the first ^axregistration when ^{▼▼Or This was the registration before} Quirinius ^azwas governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up ^bafrom Galilee, from the town of ^bbNazareth, to Judea, to ^bcthe city of David, which is called ^bdBethlehem, ^bebecause he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, ^{▼▼That is, one legally pledged to be married} who was with child. 6 And ^bgwhile they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and ^bhwrapped him in swaddling cloths and ^bilaid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in ^bjthe inn.
