The Birth of Jesus Christ

18Now the birth of aJesus Christ

took place in this way. cWhen his mother Mary had been betrothed
That is, legally pledged to be married
to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child efrom the Holy Spirit.
19And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling fto put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20But as he considered these things, behold, gan angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will bear a son, and hyou shall call his name Jesus, ifor he will save his people from their sins.” 22 jAll this took place kto fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

23 lBehold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name mImmanuel
(which means, God nwith us).
24When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And ohe called his name Jesus.

Matthew 2:13

The Flight to Egypt

13Now when they had departed, behold, pan angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.”

Luke 1:27

27 qto a virgin betrothed
That is, legally pledged to be married
to a man whose name was Joseph, sof the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary.

Luke 2:4-5

4And Joseph also went up tfrom Galilee, from the town of uNazareth, to Judea, to vthe city of David, which is called wBethlehem, xbecause he was of the house and lineage of David, 5to be registered with Mary, his betrothed,
That is, one legally pledged to be married
who was with child.
