The same Greek word can mean either soul or  life, depending on the context; twice in this verse and twice in verse 26
will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
26For gwhat will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or hwhat shall a man give in return for his soul?

Mark 8:34-37

34And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him ideny himself and jtake up his cross and follow me. 35For kwhoever would save his life
