13 ^aNow when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say ^bJohn the Baptist, others say ^cElijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, ^d“You are ^ethe Christ, ^fthe Son of ^gthe living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, ^h“Blessed are you, ⁱSimon Bar-Jonah! For ^jflesh and blood has not revealed this to you, ^kbut my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, ^lyou are Peter, and ^mon this rock ^{▼▼The Greek words for Peter and rock sound similar} I will build my church, and ^othe gates of ^phell ^{▼▼Greek the gates of Hades} shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you ^rthe keys of the kingdom of heaven, and ^swhatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed ^{▼▼Or shall have been bound . . . shall have been loosed} in heaven.” 20 ^uThen he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

21 ^vFrom that time Jesus began to show his disciples that ^whe must go to Jerusalem and ^xsuffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on ^ythe third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! ^{▼▼Or “[May God be] merciful to you, Lord!”} This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, ^aa“Get behind me, Satan! You are ^aba hindrance ^{▼▼Greek stumbling block} to me. For you ^adare not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him ^aedeny himself and ^aftake up his cross and follow me. 25 For ^agwhoever would save his life ^{▼▼The same Greek word can mean either soul or life, depending on the context; twice in this verse and twice in verse 26} will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For ^aiwhat will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or ^ajwhat shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 ^akFor the Son of Man is going to come with ^alhis angels in the glory of his Father, and ^amthen he will repay each person according to what he has done.

Luke 9:18-26

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

18 ^anNow it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” 19 And they answered, ^ao“John the Baptist. But others say, ^apElijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.” 20 Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, ^aq“The Christ of God.”

Jesus Foretells His Death

21 ^arAnd he strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, 22 ^assaying, ^at“The Son of Man must ^ausuffer many things and ^avbe rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on ^awthe third day be raised.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him ^axdeny himself and ^aytake up his cross ^azdaily and follow me. 24 For ^bawhoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 ^bbFor what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? 26 For ^bcwhoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed ^bdwhen he comes in ^behis glory and the glory of the Father and of ^bfthe holy angels.
