Who Is the Greatest?

1 aAt that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them 3and said, Truly, I say to you, unless you bturn and cbecome like children, you dwill never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 eWhoever humbles himself like this child is the fgreatest in the kingdom of heaven.

5 gWhoever receives one such child in my name receives me,

A Mother’s Request

33And uthey came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house vhe asked them, What were you discussing on the way?” 34But they kept silent, for on the way wthey had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 35And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, x“If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” 36And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and ytaking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 zWhoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and aawhoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”

The Parable of the Wedding Feast

7Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed abhow they chose the places of honor, saying to them, 8When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, 9and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, acso that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. 11For adeveryone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Who Is the Greatest?

24 aeA dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 afAnd he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles agexercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 ahBut not so with you. Rather, let aithe greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. 27For who is the greater, ajone who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But akI am among you as the one who serves.
