Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

17 aAnd as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, 18See, bwe are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will ccondemn him to death 19and ddeliver him over to the Gentiles eto be mocked and flogged and fcrucified, and he will be raised on gthe third day.”

A Mother’s Request

20 hThen ithe mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and jkneeling before him she asked him for something. 21And he said to her, What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine kare to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, lin your kingdom.” 22Jesus answered, m“You do not know what you are asking. Are you able nto drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.”

And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33saying, See, rwe are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will scondemn him to death and tdeliver him over to the Gentiles. 34And they will umock him and vspit on him, and flog him and kill him. And wafter three days he will rise.”

The Request of James and John

35 xAnd James and John, ythe sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us zwhatever we ask of you.” 36And he said to them, aaWhat do you want me to do for you?” 37And they said to him, “Grant us abto sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, acin your glory.” 38Jesus said to them, ad“You do not know what you are asking. Are you able aeto drink the cup that I drink, or afto be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?”
