Matthew 22:15-46

Paying Taxes to Caesar

15 aThen the Pharisees went and plotted how bto entangle him in his words. 16And they sent ctheir disciples to him, along with dthe Herodians, saying, “Teacher, ewe know that you are true and teach fthe way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for gyou are not swayed by appearances.
Greek for you do not look at people’s faces
17Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay itaxes to jCaesar, or not?” 18But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, Why kput me to the test, you hypocrites? 19Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius.
A  denarius was a day’s wage for a laborer
20And Jesus said to them, Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, mTherefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 22When they heard it, they marveled. And they nleft him and went away.

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

23The same day oSadducees came to him, pwho say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, 24saying, “Teacher, Moses said, qIf a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ 25Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. 26So too the second and third, down to the seventh. 27After them all, the woman died. 28In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”

29But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, rbecause you know neither the Scriptures nor sthe power of God. 30For in the resurrection they neither tmarry nor uare given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31And as for the resurrection of the dead, vhave you not read what was said to you by God: 32 wI am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” 33And when the crowd heard it, xthey were astonished at his teaching.

The Great Commandment

34 yBut when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced zthe Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 aaAnd one of them, aba lawyer, asked him a question acto test him. 36Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37And he said to him, ad“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38This is the great and first commandment. 39And aea second is like it: afYou shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 agOn these two commandments depend ahall the Law and the Prophets.”

Whose Son Is the Christ?

41 aiNow while the Pharisees ajwere gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42saying, What do you think about akthe Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, al“The son of David.” 43He said to them, How is it then that David, amin the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

44 an“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet”’?
45If then David calls him Lord, aohow is he his son?” 46 apAnd no one was able to answer him a word, aqnor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

Luke 20:20-47

20 arSo they aswatched him and sent spies, who atpretended to be sincere, that they might aucatch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of avthe governor. 21So they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and awshow no partiality,

but truly teach aythe way of God.
22Is it lawful for us to give aztribute to baCaesar, or not?” 23But he perceived their bbcraftiness, and said to them, 24Show me bca denarius.
A  denarius was a day’s wage for a laborer
Whose likeness and inscription does it have?”
They said, “Caesar’s.”
25He said to them, Then berender to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 26And they were not able in the presence of the people bfto catch him in what he said, but marveling at his answer they became silent.

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

27There came to him bgsome Sadducees, bhthose who deny that there is a resurrection, 28and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us bithat if a man’s brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man

must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.
29Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children. 30And the second 31and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. 32Afterward the woman also died. 33In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife.”

34And Jesus said to them, bk“The sons of this age blmarry and bmare given in marriage, 35but those who are bnconsidered worthy to attain to bothat age and to the resurrection from the dead bpneither marry bqnor are given in marriage, 36for brthey cannot die anymore, because they are bsequal to angels and btare busons of God, being bvsons

of the resurrection.
37But that the dead are raised, bxeven Moses showed, in bythe passage about the bush, where he calls bzthe Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. 38Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all calive to him.” 39Then some of the scribes cbanswered, “Teacher, you have spoken well.” 40For ccthey no longer dared to ask him any question.

Whose Son Is the Christ?

41 cdBut he said to them, How can they say that cethe Christ is cfDavid’s son? 42For David himself says in the Book of Psalms,

cg“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at my right hand,
43until I make your enemies chyour footstool.”’
44David thus calls him Lord, so cihow is he his son?”

Beware of the Scribes

45 cjAnd in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, 46Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and ckthe places of honor at feasts, 47 clwho devour widowshouses and cmfor a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
