Matthew 23:16-24

16Woe to ayou, bblind guides, who say, cIf anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or dthe temple that has made the gold sacred? 18And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by ethe gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ 19You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or fthe altar that makes the gift sacred? 20So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by ghim who dwells in it. 22And whoever swears by hheaven swears by ithe throne of God and by jhim who sits upon it.

23 kWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For lyou tithe mint and dill and mcumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: njustice and mercy and faithfulness. oThese you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing pa camel!

Mark 7:3-13

3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly,
Greek  unless they wash the hands with a fist, probably indicating a kind of ceremonial washing
holding to rthe tradition of sthe elders,
4and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash.
Greek  unless they baptize; some manuscripts  unless they purify themselves
And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as uthe washing of vcups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.
Some manuscripts omit  and dining couches
)
5And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to xthe tradition of ythe elders, zbut eat with aadefiled hands?” 6And he said to them, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you abhypocrites, as it is written,

ac“‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;
7in vain do they worship me,
teaching as addoctrines the commandments of men.’
8You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”

9And he said to them, “You have a fine way of aerejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10For Moses said, afHonor your father and your mother’; and, ag‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 11But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God)
Or an offering
12then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, 13thus aimaking void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”
