Matthew 23:2-5

2 a“The scribes and the Pharisees bsit on Mosesseat, 3so do and observe whatever they tell you, cbut not the works they do. dFor they preach, but do not practice. 4 eThey tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear,

5 gThey do all their deeds hto be seen by others. For they make itheir phylacteries broad and jtheir fringes long,

Matthew 23:23-28

23 kWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For lyou tithe mint and dill and mcumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: njustice and mercy and faithfulness. oThese you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing pa camel!

25 qWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ryou clean the outside of sthe cup and the plate, but inside they are full of tgreed and self-indulgence. 26You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of uthe cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

27 vWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like wwhitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and xall uncleanness. 28So you also youtwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of zhypocrisy and lawlessness.

Luke 11:39-40

39And the Lord said to him, aaNow you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of abgreed and wickedness. 40 acYou fools! adDid not he who made the outside make the inside also?

44Woe to you! aeFor you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”

Beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees

1In the meantime, afwhen so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, agBeware of ahthe leaven of the Pharisees, aiwhich is hypocrisy.

12 atI fast twice a week; auI give tithes of all that I get.’ 13But the tax collector, avstanding far off, awwould not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but axbeat his breast, saying, ‘God, aybe merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For azeveryone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Luke 20:46-47

46Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and bathe places of honor at feasts, 47 bbwho devour widowshouses and bcfor a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
