Matthew 24

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

1 aJesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. 2But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, bthere will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

Signs of the End of the Age

3As he sat on cthe Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him dprivately, saying, “Tell us, ewhen will these things be, and what will be the sign of your fcoming and of gthe end of the age?” 4And Jesus answered them, hSee that no one leads you astray. 5For imany will come in my name, saying, ‘I am jthe Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. 6And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you kare not alarmed, for this lmust take place, but the end is not yet. 7For mnation will rise against nation, and nkingdom against kingdom, and there will be ofamines and earthquakes in various places. 8All these are but the beginning of pthe birth pains.

9Then qthey will deliver you up rto tribulation and sput you to death, and tyou will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. 10And then many will fall away
Or stumble
and vbetray one another and hate one another.
11And many wfalse prophets will arise xand lead many astray. 12And because lawlessness will be increased, ythe love of many will grow cold. 13 zBut the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14And this gospel of the kingdom aawill be proclaimed throughout the whole world abas a testimony acto all nations, and adthen the end will come.

The Abomination of Desolation

15So when you see the abomination of desolation aespoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in afthe holy place ( aglet the reader understand), 16then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 ahLet the one who is on aithe housetop not go down to take what is in his house, 18and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 19And ajalas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! 20Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. 21For then there will be akgreat tribulation, alsuch as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. 22And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for amthe sake of the elect those days will be cut short. 23 anThen if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ orThere he is!’ do not believe it. 24For aofalse christs and apfalse prophets will arise and aqperform great signs and wonders, arso as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. 25See, asI have told you beforehand. 26So, if they say to you, ‘Look, athe is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 auFor as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be avthe coming of the Son of Man. 28 awWherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

The Coming of the Son of Man

29Immediately after axthe tribulation of those days aythe sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and azthe stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30Then bawill appear in heaven bbthe sign of the Son of Man, and then bcall the tribes of the earth will mourn, and bdthey will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven bewith power and great glory. 31And bfhe will send out his angels with a loud bgtrumpet call, and they will bhgather bihis elect from bjthe four winds, bkfrom one end of heaven to the other.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

32From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 33So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, blat the very gates. 34 bmTruly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 35 bnHeaven and earth will pass away, but bomy words will not pass away.

No One Knows That Day and Hour

36But concerning that day and hour bpno one knows, not even the angels of heaven, bqnor the Son,
Some manuscripts omit  nor the Son
bsbut the Father only.
37 btFor as were the days of Noah, buso will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 bvFor as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, bwmarrying and giving in marriage, until bxthe day when Noah entered the ark, 39and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, byso will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. 41 bzTwo women will be grinding caat the mill; one will be taken and one left. 42Therefore, cbstay awake, for you do not know on what day ccyour Lord is coming. 43 cdBut know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night cethe thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44Therefore you also must be cfready, for cgthe Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

45Who then is chthe faithful and ciwise servant,
Greek bondservant; also verses 46, 48, 50
whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time?
46 ckBlessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 47Truly, I say to you, clhe will set him over all his possessions. 48But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master cmis delayed,’ 49and begins to beat his fellow servants
Greek bondservants
and eats and drinks with codrunkards,
50the master of that servant will come cpon a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know 51and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place cqthere will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 25

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

1Then the kingdom of heaven will be like crten virgins who took their lamps
Or torches
and went to meet ctthe bridegroom.
Some manuscripts add and the bride
2Five of them were foolish, and five were cvwise. 3For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, 4but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. 5As the bridegroom cwwas delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. 6But cxat midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ 7Then all those virgins rose and cytrimmed their lamps. 8And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ 10And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and czthose who were ready went in with him to dathe marriage feast, and dbthe door was shut. 11Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, dcLord, lord, open to us.’ 12 ddBut he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, deI do not know you.’ 13 dfWatch therefore, for you dgknow neither the day nor the hour.

The Parable of the Talents

14 dhFor diit will be like a man djgoing on a journey, who called his servants
Greek bondservants; also verse 19
and entrusted to them his property.
15To one he gave five dltalents,
A  talent was a monetary unit worth about twenty years’ wages for a laborer
to another two, to another one, dnto each according to his ability. Then he dowent away.
16He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18But he who had received the one talent went and dpdug in the ground and hid his master’s money. 19Now dqafter a long time the master of those servants came and drsettled accounts with them. 20And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ 21His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and dsfaithful servant.
Greek bondservant; also verses 23, 26, 30
duYou have been faithful over a little; dvI will set you over much. Enter into dwthe joy of your master.’
22And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, I have made two talents more.’ 23His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 24He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be dxa hard man, reaping dywhere you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, 25so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, dzyou have what is yours.’ 26But his master answered him, ‘You eawicked and ebslothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? 27Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. 28So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29 ecFor to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 30And edcast eethe worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place efthere will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

The Final Judgment

31 egWhen the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, ehthen he will sit on his glorious throne. 32Before him eiwill be gathered ejall the nations, and ekhe will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates elthe sheep from the goats. 33And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34Then emthe King will say to enthose on his right, ‘Come, you eowho are blessed by my Father, epinherit eqthe kingdom erprepared for you esfrom the foundation of the world. 35For etI was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you eugave me drink, evI was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 ewI was naked and you clothed me, exI was sick and you eyvisited me, ezI was in prison and you came to me.’ 37Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40And fathe King will answer them, fbTruly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these fcmy brothers,
Or  brothers and sisters
you did it to me.’

41Then he will say to those on his left, feDepart from me, you ffcursed, into fgthe eternal fire prepared for fhthe devil and his angels. 42For fiI was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ 45Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, fjyou did not do it to me.’ 46And these will go away fkinto eternal punishment, but the righteous flinto fmeternal life.”
