The Parable of the Talents

14 aFor bit will be like a man cgoing on a journey, who called his servants
Greek bondservants; also verse 19
and entrusted to them his property.
15To one he gave five etalents,
A  talent was a monetary unit worth about twenty years’ wages for a laborer
to another two, to another one, gto each according to his ability. Then he hwent away.
16He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18But he who had received the one talent went and idug in the ground and hid his master’s money. 19Now jafter a long time the master of those servants came and ksettled accounts with them. 20And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ 21His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and lfaithful servant.
Greek bondservant; also verses 23, 26, 30
nYou have been faithful over a little; oI will set you over much. Enter into pthe joy of your master.’
22And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, I have made two talents more.’ 23His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 24He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be qa hard man, reaping rwhere you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, 25so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, syou have what is yours.’ 26But his master answered him, ‘You twicked and uslothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? 27Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. 28So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29 vFor to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

Luke 12:15-21

15And he said to them, w“Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16And he told them a parable, saying, x“The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17and he thought to himself, yWhat shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my zbarns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up aafor many years; relax, abeat, drink, be merry.”’ 20But God said to him, acFool! adThis night aeyour soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, afwhose will they be?’ 21So is the one agwho lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

1He also said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had aha manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was wasting his possessions. 2And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? 18And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made five minas.’ 19And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ 20Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in ama handkerchief; 21for I was afraid of you, because you are ana severe man. You take aowhat you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22He said to him, ap‘I will condemn you with your own words, aqyou wicked servant! You knew that I was ara severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? 23Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’ 24And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’ 26‘I tell you that asto everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
