17 ^aNow on ^bthe first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ^c‘The Teacher says, ^dMy time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.

20 ^eWhen it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve. ^{▼▼Some manuscripts add disciples} 21 And as they were eating, ^ghe said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” 23 He answered, ^h“He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes ⁱas it is written of him, but ^jwoe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! ^kIt would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 25 Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, ^lRabbi?” He said to him, ^m“You have said so.”

Institution of the Lord’s Supper

26 ⁿNow as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and ^oafter blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; ^pthis is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he ^qhad given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for ^rthis is my ^sblood of the ^{▼▼Some manuscripts insert new} covenant, which is poured out for ^umany ^vfor the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you ^win my Father’s kingdom.”

The Passover with the Disciples

7 ^aaThen came ^abthe day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 So Jesus ^{▼▼Greek he} sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.” 9 They said to him, “Where will you have us prepare it?” 10 He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters 11 and tell the master of the house, ^ad‘The Teacher says to you, Where is ^aethe guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 And he will show you ^afa large upper room furnished; prepare it there.” 13 And they went and found it ^agjust as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

14 ^ahAnd when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you I will not eat it ^{▼▼Some manuscripts never eat it again} ^ajuntil it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And he took a cup, and ^akwhen he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18 ^alFor I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine ^amuntil the kingdom of God comes.” 19 ^anAnd he took bread, and ^aowhen he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ^ap“This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, ^aq“This cup that is poured out for you is ^arthe new ^ascovenant in my blood. ^{▼▼Some manuscripts omit, in whole or in part, verses 19b-20 ( which is given . . . in my blood)} 21 ^auBut behold, the hand of him who betrays me is ^avwith me on the table. 22 For the Son of Man goes ^awas it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” 23 And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.

One of You Will Betray Me

21 After saying these things, ^baJesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, ^bb“Truly, truly, I say to you, ^bcone of you will betray me.” 22 ^bdThe disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 ^beOne of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table ^bfat Jesus’ side, ^{▼▼Greek in the bosom of Jesus} 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus ^{▼▼Greek lacks Jesus} of whom he was speaking. 25 ^biSo that disciple, ^bjleaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, ^bk“It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread ^blwhen I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, ^bmhe gave it to Judas, ^bnthe son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after he had taken the morsel, ^boSatan entered into him. Jesus said to him, ^bp“What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, ^bqbecause Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need ^brfor the feast,” or that he should ^bsgive something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. ^btAnd it was night.
