Jesus Anointed at Bethany

3 eAnd while he was at fBethany in the house of Simon the leper,
Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases; see Leviticus 13
as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.
4There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that? 5For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii
A  denarius was a day’s wage for a laborer
and igiven to the poor.” And they jscolded her.
6But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7For kyou always have the poor with you, and whenever lyou want, you can do good for them. But myou will not always have me. 8 nShe has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand ofor burial. 9And truly, I say to you, wherever pthe gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told qin memory of her.”

John 11:2-16

2 rIt was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. 3So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, she whom you love is ill.” 4But when Jesus heard it he said, tThis illness does not lead to death. It is for uthe glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

5Now vJesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6So, when he heard that Lazarus
Greek he; also verse 17
was ill, xhe stayed two days longer in the place where he was.
7Then after this he said to the disciples, y“Let us go to Judea again.” 8The disciples said to him, zRabbi, aathe Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” 9Jesus answered, ab“Are there not twelve hours in the day? acIf anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10But adif anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not aein him.” 11After saying these things, he said to them, Our friend Lazarus afhas fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” 12The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14Then Jesus told them plainly, Lazarus has died, 15and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 agSo Thomas, called the Twin,
Greek Didymus
said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, aithat we may die with him.”
