1 aWhen morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people btook counsel against Jesus to put him to death. 2And they bound him and cled him away and ddelivered him over to ePilate the governor.

Judas Hangs Himself

3Then when fJudas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus
Greek he
was condemned, hhe changed his mind and brought back ithe thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders,
4saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? jSee to it yourself.” 5And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, khe departed, and he went and hanged himself. 6But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into lthe treasury, since it is blood money.” 7So they took counsel and bought with them the potter’s field as a burial place for strangers. 8Therefore mthat field has been called the Field of Blood nto this day. 9 oThen was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, pAnd they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel, 10and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.”

Jesus Before Pilate

11 qNow Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you rthe King of the Jews?” Jesus said, sYou have said so.” 12 tBut when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. 13Then Pilate said to him, u“Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” 14But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.

The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

15 vNow at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. 16And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 17So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or wJesus who is called Christ?” 18For he knew that it was out xof envy that they had delivered him up. 19Besides, while he was sitting on ythe judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with zthat righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today aain a dream.” 20Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to abask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” acThey all said, “Let him be crucified!” 23And he said, “Why? adWhat evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!”

24So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that aea riot was beginning, he took water and afwashed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of agthis man’s blood;

aisee to it yourselves.”
25And all the people answered, ajHis blood be on us and akon our children!” 26Then he released for them Barabbas, and having alscourged
A Roman judicial penalty, consisting of a severe beating with a multi-lashed whip containing imbedded pieces of bone and metal
Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

27 anThen the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the aogovernor’s headquarters,
Greek  the praetorium
and they gathered the whole aqbattalion
Greek cohort; a tenth of a Roman legion, usually about 600 men
before him.
28And they stripped him and put asa scarlet robe on him, 29and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they atmocked him, saying, “Hail, auKing of the Jews!” 30And avthey spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. 31And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and awled him away to crucify him.

Luke 23:1-25

Jesus Before Pilate

1 axThen the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate. 2And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man aymisleading our nation and azforbidding us to give tribute to baCaesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, bba king.” 3 bcAnd Pilate asked him, bdAre you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, beYou have said so.” 4Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, bf“I find no guilt in this man.” 5But they were urgent, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, bgfrom Galilee even to this place.”

Jesus Before Herod

6When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. 7And when he learned that he belonged to bhHerod’s jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. 8When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, bifor he had long desired to see him, bjbecause he had heard about him, and he was hoping bkto see some sign done by him. 9So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer. 10The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. 11And Herod with his soldiers bltreated him with contempt and bmmocked him. Then, bnarraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate. 12And boHerod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.

13Pilate then called together the chief priests and bpthe rulers and the people, 14and said to them, “You brought me this man bqas one who was misleading the people. And brafter examining him before you, behold, I bsdid not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him. 15Neither did Herod, for bthe sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him. 16 buI will therefore punish and release him.”
Here, or after verse 19, some manuscripts add verse 17: Now he was obliged to release one man to them at the festival

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

18 bwBut they all cried out together, bx“Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas”— 19a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and byfor murder. 20Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus, 21but they kept shouting, “Crucify, crucify him!” 22A third time he said to them, “Why, bzWhat evil has he done? caI have found in him no guilt deserving death. cbI will therefore punish and release him.” 23But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed. 24So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted. 25He released the man who had been thrown into prison ccfor insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, cdbut he delivered Jesus over to their will.

John 18:28-40

Jesus Before Pilate

28 ceThen they led Jesus cffrom the house of Caiaphas to cgthe governor’s headquarters.
Greek  the praetorium
It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, ciso that they would not be defiled, cjbut could eat the Passover.
29 ckSo Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.” 31Pilate said to them, clTake him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.” 32 cmThis was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken cnto show by what kind of death he was going to die.

My Kingdom Is Not of This World

33 coSo Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, cpAre you the King of the Jews?” 34Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” 35Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” 36Jesus answered, cqMy kingdom cris not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, csmy servants would have been fighting, that ctI might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” 37Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, cuYou say that I am a king. cvFor this purpose I was born and for this purpose cwI have come into the worldcxto bear witness to the truth. cyEveryone who is czof the truth dalistens to my voice.” 38Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”

After he had said this, dbhe went back outside to the Jews and told them, dcI find no guilt in him.
39 ddBut you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” 40They cried out again, deNot this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
Or  an insurrectionist

John 19:1-16

Jesus Delivered to Be Crucified

1Then Pilate took Jesus and dgflogged him. 2 dhAnd the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. 3They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. 4Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that diI find no guilt in him.” 5So Jesus came out, wearing djthe crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, dkBehold the man!” 6When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, dlTake him yourselves and crucify him, for dmI find no guilt in him.” 7The Jews
Greek Ioudaioi probably refers here to Jewish religious leaders, and others under their influence, in that time; also verses 12, 14, 31, 38
answered him, “We have a law, and doaccording to that law he ought to die because dphe has made himself the Son of God.”
8When Pilate heard this statement, dqhe was even more afraid. 9 drHe entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, ds“Where are you from?” But dtJesus gave him no answer. 10So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” 11Jesus answered him, du“You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore dvhe who delivered me over to you dwhas the greater sin.”

12From then on dxPilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. dyEveryone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” 13So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on dzthe judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic
Or Hebrew; also verses 17, 20
Gabbatha.
14Now it was ebthe day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour.
That is, about noon
He said to the Jews, edBehold your King!”
15They cried out, ee“Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” 16 efSo he egdelivered him over to them to be crucified.
