2And they bound him and aled him away and bdelivered him over to cPilate the governor.

Matthew 27:11-36

Jesus Before Pilate

11 dNow Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you ethe King of the Jews?” Jesus said, fYou have said so.” 12 gBut when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. 13Then Pilate said to him, h“Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” 14But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.

The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

15 iNow at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. 16And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 17So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or jJesus who is called Christ?” 18For he knew that it was out kof envy that they had delivered him up. 19Besides, while he was sitting on lthe judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with mthat righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today nin a dream.” 20Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to oask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” pThey all said, “Let him be crucified!” 23And he said, “Why? qWhat evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!”

25And all the people answered, wHis blood be on us and xon our children!” 26Then he released for them Barabbas, and having yscourged

6 bdNow at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. 7And among the rebels in prison, who had becommitted murder bfin the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. 8And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. 9And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10For he perceived that bgit was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. 11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. 12And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with bhthe man you call the King of the Jews?” 13And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” 14And Pilate said to them, “Why? biWhat evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” 15So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having bjscourged

13Pilate then called together the chief priests and cpthe rulers and the people, 14and said to them, “You brought me this man cqas one who was misleading the people. And crafter examining him before you, behold, I csdid not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him. 15Neither did Herod, for cthe sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him. 16 cuI will therefore punish and release him.”
Here, or after verse 19, some manuscripts add verse 17: Now he was obliged to release one man to them at the festival

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

18 cwBut they all cried out together, cx“Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas”— 19a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and cyfor murder. 20Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus, 21but they kept shouting, “Crucify, crucify him!” 22A third time he said to them, “Why, czWhat evil has he done? daI have found in him no guilt deserving death. dbI will therefore punish and release him.” 23But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed. 24So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted. 25He released the man who had been thrown into prison dcfor insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, ddbut he delivered Jesus over to their will.

The Crucifixion

26 deAnd as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus. 27And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were dfmourning and lamenting for him. 28But turning to them Jesus said, Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29For behold, dgthe days are coming when they will say, dhBlessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30 diThen they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31For djif they do these things when dkthe wood is green, what will happen dlwhen it is dry?”

32 dmTwo others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. 33 dnAnd when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, doone on his right and one on his left. 34And Jesus said, Father, dpforgive them, dqfor they know not what they do.”
