Matthew 27:51-66

51And behold, athe curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And bthe earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of cthe saints dwho had fallen asleep were raised, 53and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into ethe holy city and appeared to many. 54 fWhen the centurion and those who were with him, gkeeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, hTruly this was the Son
Or a son
of God!”

55There were also jmany women there, looking on kfrom a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, lministering to him, 56among whom were mMary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and nthe mother of the sons of Zebedee.

Jesus Is Buried

57 oWhen it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. 58He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60and plaid it in his own new tomb, qwhich he had cut in the rock. And he rolled ra great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61Mary Magdalene and sthe other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.

The Guard at the Tomb

62The next day, that is, after the day of tPreparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63and said, “Sir, we remember how uthat impostor said, while he was still alive, vAfter three days I will rise.’ 64Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, wlest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” 65Pilate said to them, “You have xa guard
Or Take a guard
of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.”
66So they went and made the tomb secure by zsealing the stone and setting a guard.

47Now abwhen the centurion saw what had taken place, ache praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!” 48And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home adbeating their breasts. 49And all aehis acquaintances and afthe women who had followed him from Galilee agstood at a distance watching these things.

Jesus Is Buried

50 ahNow there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man, 51who had not consented to their decision and action; and he aiwas looking for the kingdom of God. 52This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and ajlaid him in a tomb cut in stone, akwhere no one had ever yet been laid. 54It was the day of alPreparation, and the Sabbath was beginning.

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced

31Since it was arthe day of Preparation, and asso that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was ata high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other auwho had been crucified with him. 33But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out avblood and water. 35 awHe who saw it has borne witnessaxhis testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truthaythat you also may believe. 36 azFor these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: ba“Not one of his bones bbwill be broken.” 37And again another Scripture says, bc“They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

Jesus Is Buried

38 bdAfter these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly befor fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 bfNicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus
Greek him
by night, came bhbringing a mixture of bimyrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds
Greek one hundred litras; a litra (or Roman pound) was equal to about 11 1/2 ounces or 327 grams
in weight.
40So they took the body of Jesus and bkbound it in bllinen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41Now in the place where he was crucified there was a bmgarden, and bnin the garden a new tomb boin which no one had yet been laid. 42So because of the Jewish bpday of Preparation, bqsince the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.
