Matthew 3:1-11

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

1 aIn those days bJohn the Baptist came preaching in cthe wilderness of Judea, 2 dRepent, for ethe kingdom of heaven is at hand.” 3For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said,

f“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
gPrepare
Or  crying: Prepare in the wilderness
the way of the Lord;
make his paths straight.’”
4Now John wore ia garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was jlocusts and kwild honey. 5Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, 6and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, lconfessing their sins.

7But when he saw many of mthe Pharisees and nSadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, o“You brood of pvipers! Who warned you to flee from qthe wrath to come? 8Bear fruit rin keeping with repentance. 9And do not presume to say to yourselves, s‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from tthese stones to raise up children for Abraham. 10Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. uEvery tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

11 vI baptize you with water wfor repentance, but xhe who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you ywith the Holy Spirit and zfire.

Mark 1:2-8

aePrepare
Or  crying: Prepare in the wilderness
the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight,’”
4 agJohn appeared, baptizing in ahthe wilderness and proclaiming aia baptism of ajrepentance akfor the forgiveness of sins. 5And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, alconfessing their sins. 6Now John was amclothed with camel’s hair and anwore a leather belt around his waist and ate aolocusts and apwild honey. 7And he preached, saying, aqAfter me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 arI have baptized you with water, but ashe will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Luke 1:76

76And you, child, will be called atthe prophet of authe Most High;
for avyou will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,

Luke 3:2-20

2during awthe high priesthood of Annas and axCaiaphas, aythe word of God came to azJohn the son of Zechariah in bathe wilderness. 3And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming bba baptism of repentance bcfor the forgiveness of sins. 4As it is written in bdthe book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,

be“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
bfPrepare the way of the Lord,
Or  crying, Prepare in the wilderness the way of the Lord

make his paths straight.
5 bhEvery valley shall be filled,
biand every mountain and hill shall be made low,
bjand the crooked shall become straight,
and the rough places shall become level ways,
6 bkand all flesh shall see blthe salvation of God.’”
7He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, bm“You brood of bnvipers! Who warned you to flee from bothe wrath to come? 8Bear fruits bpin keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, bq‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from brthese stones to raise up children for Abraham. 9Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. bsEvery tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10And the crowds asked him, btWhat then shall we do?” 11And he answered them, bu“Whoever has two tunics
Greek chiton, a long garment worn under the cloak next to the skin
is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”
12 bwTax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, bxwhat shall we do?” 13And he said to them, byCollect no more than you are authorized to do.” 14Soldiers also asked him, “And we, bzwhat shall we do?” And he said to them, ca“Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your cbwages.”

15As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, ccwhether he might be cdthe Christ, 16 ceJohn answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but cfhe who is mightier than I is coming, cgthe strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you chwith the Holy Spirit and cifire. 17His cjwinnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to ckgather the wheat into his barn, clbut the chaff he will burn with cmunquenchable fire.”

18So cnwith many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. 19But coHerod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, 20added this to them all, that cphe locked up John in prison.
