Matthew 3:9

9And do not presume to say to yourselves, a‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from bthese stones to raise up children for Abraham.

John 8:33-44

33They answered him, c“We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”

34Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, deveryone who practices sin is a slave
Greek bondservant; also verse 35
to sin.
35 fThe slave does not remain in the house forever; gthe son remains forever. 36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet hyou seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 iI speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard jfrom your father.”

You Are of Your Father the Devil

39They answered him, kAbraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, lIf you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, 40but now myou seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth nthat I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, oWe were not born of sexual immorality. We have pone Father—even God.” 42Jesus said to them, qIf God were your Father, you would love me, for rI came from God and sI am here. tI came not of my own accord, but uhe sent me. 43 vWhy do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot wbear to hear my word. 44 xYou are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. yHe was a murderer from the beginning, and zdoes not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. aaWhen he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Romans 4:12-13

12and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

The Promise Realized Through Faith

13For abthe promise to Abraham and his offspring acthat he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.

Romans 9:4-8

4They are adIsraelites, and to them belong aethe adoption, afthe glory, agthe covenants, ahthe giving of the law, aithe worship, and ajthe promises. 5To them belong akthe patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, alwho is God over all, amblessed forever. Amen.

6But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, 7and not all are children of Abraham anbecause they are his offspring, but aoThrough Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 8This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but apthe children of the promise are counted as offspring.

Galatians 3:19

19Why then the law? aqIt was added because of transgressions, aruntil the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was asput in place through angels atby an intermediary.

Galatians 4:22-31

22For it is written that Abraham had two sons, auone by a slave woman and avone by a free woman. 23But awthe son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while axthe son of the free woman was born through promise. 24Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two aycovenants. azOne is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. 25Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia;
Some manuscripts For Sinai is a mountain in Arabia
she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children.
26But bbthe Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. 27For it is written,

bcRejoice, O barren one who does not bear;
break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor!
For the children of the desolate one will be more
than those of the one who has a husband.”
28Now you,
Some manuscripts we
brothers, belike Isaac, bfare children of promise.
29But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh bgpersecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, bhso also it is now. 30But what does the Scripture say? bi“Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” 31So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but bjof the free woman.
