Matthew 5:17-48

Christ Came to Fulfill the Law

17 a“Do not think that I have come to abolish bthe Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but cto fulfill them. 18For truly, I say to you, duntil heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 eTherefore whoever relaxes fone of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least gin the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great hin the kingdom of heaven. 20For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds ithat of the scribes and Pharisees, you jwill never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Anger

21 k“You have heard that it was said to those of old, l‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable mto judgment.’ 22But I say to you that neveryone who is angry with his brother

will be liable pto judgment; whoever insults
Greek says Raca to (a term of abuse)
his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to rthe hell

of fire.
23 tSo if uyou are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 vCome to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26Truly, I say to you, wyou will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

Lust

27 y“You have heard that it was said, z‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28But I say to you that aaeveryone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 abIf your right eye accauses you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into adhell. 30 aeAnd if your right hand afcauses you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into aghell.

Divorce

31 ah“It was also said, aiWhoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 ajBut I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and akwhoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Oaths

33Again alyou have heard that it was said to those of old, am‘You shall not swear falsely, but anshall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ 34But I say to you, aoDo not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for apit is the throne of God, 35or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is aqthe city of the great King. 36And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37Let what you say be simply ‘Yesor ‘No’; aranything more than this comes from evil.
Or the evil one

Retaliation

38 at“You have heard that it was said, au‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39But I say to you, avDo not resist the one who is evil. But awif anyone axslaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40And ayif anyone would sue you and take your tunic,
Greek chiton, a long garment worn under the cloak next to the skin
let him have your cloak as well.
41And if anyone baforces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 bbGive to the one who begs from you, and bcdo not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

Love Your Enemies

43 bd“You have heard that it was said, be‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44But I say to you, bfLove your enemies and bgpray for those who persecute you, 45 bhso that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and bisends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 bjFor if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47And if you greet only your brothers,
Or  brothers and sisters. The plural Greek word adelphoi (translated “brothers”) refers to siblings in a family. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, adelphoi may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters
what more are you doing than others? Do not even blthe Gentiles do the same?
48 bmYou therefore must be bnperfect, boas your heavenly Father is perfect.

Romans 13:9

9For the commandments, bp“You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: bq“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
