The Authority of Jesus Challenged

23 cAnd when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him das he was teaching, and said, eBy what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” 24Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25The baptism of John, ffrom where did it come? gFrom heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, hWhy then did you not believe him?’ 26But if we say, ‘From man,’ iwe are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was ja prophet.” 27So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

The Parable of the Two Sons

28 kWhat do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in lthe vineyard today.’ 29And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he mchanged his mind and went. 30And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. 31Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, Truly, I say to you, nthe tax collectors and othe prostitutes go into pthe kingdom of God before you.

Romans 6:16-22

16Do you not know that if you present yourselves wto anyone as obedient slaves,
For the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface (twice in this verse and verse 19; also once in verses 17, 20)
you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?
17But ythanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the zstandard of teaching to which you were committed, 18and, aahaving been set free from sin, abhave become slaves of righteousness. 19 acI am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For adjust as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members aeas slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.

20 afFor when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 agBut what fruit were you getting at that time from the things ahof which you are now ashamed? aiFor the end of those things is death. 22But now that you ajhave been set free from sin and akhave become slaves of God, althe fruit you get leads to sanctification and amits end, eternal life.

1 Corinthians 6:11
