18 But Edom said to him, “You shall not pass through, lest I come out with the sword against you.”

Deuteronomy 23:3-4

3 ^a“No Ammonite or Moabite may enter the assembly of the Lord. Even to the tenth generation, none of them may enter the assembly of the Lord forever, 4 ^bbecause they did not meet you with bread and with water on the way, when you came out of Egypt, and because they ^chired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of ^dMesopotamia, to curse you.

Judges 11:17-18

17 ^eIsrael then sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let us pass through your land,’ ^fbut the king of Edom would not listen. And they sent also to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel ^gremained at Kadesh.

18 “Then they journeyed through the wilderness and ^hwent around the land of Edom and the land of Moab and ⁱarrived on the east side of the land of Moab and ^jcamped on the other side of the Arnon. But they did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was the boundary of Moab.
