Numbers 21:21-35

King Sihon Defeated

21Then aIsrael sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying, 22 b“Let me pass through your land. We will not turn aside into field or vineyard. We will not drink the water of a well. We will go by the King’s Highway until we have passed through your territory.” 23 cBut Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his territory. He gathered all his people together and went out against Israel to the wilderness and dcame to Jahaz and fought against Israel. 24 eAnd Israel defeated him with the edge of the sword and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the fJabbok, as far as to the Ammonites, for the border of the Ammonites was strong. 25And Israel took all these cities, and Israel settled in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its villages. 26For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land out of his hand, as far as the Arnon. 27Therefore the gballad singers say,

Come to hHeshbon, let it be built;
let the city of Sihon be established.
28For ifire came out from jHeshbon,
flame from the city of Sihon.
It devoured kAr of Moab,
and swallowed
Septuagint; Hebrew the lords of
the heights of the Arnon.
29 mWoe to you, O Moab!
You are undone, O people of nChemosh!
He has made his sons fugitives,
and his daughters captives,
to an Amorite king, Sihon.
30So we overthrew them;
Heshbon, as far as oDibon, perished;
and we laid waste as far as Nophah;
fire spread as far as pMedeba.”
Compare Samaritan and Septuagint; Hebrew  and we laid waste as far as Nophah, which is as far as Medeba

King Og Defeated

31Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites. 32And Moses sent to spy out rJazer, and they captured its villages and dispossessed the Amorites who were there. 33Then they turned and went up by the way to Bashan. And Og the king of Bashan came out against them, he and all his people, to battle sat Edrei. 34 tBut the Lord said to Moses, “Do not fear him, for I have given him into your hand, and all his people, and his land. And uyou shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.” 35So they defeated him and his sons and all his people, until he had no survivor left. And they possessed his land.

Numbers 32:33-42

33And vMoses gave to them, to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land and its cities with their territories, the cities of the land throughout the country. 34And the people of Gad built wDibon, xAtaroth, yAroer, 35Atroth-shophan, zJazer, Jogbehah, 36 aaBeth-nimrah and Beth-haran, abfortified cities, and folds for sheep. 37And the people of Reuben built acHeshbon, adElealeh, Kiriathaim, 38 aeNebo, and afBaal-meon ( agtheir names were changed), and ahSibmah. And they gave other names to the cities that they built. 39And the sons of aiMachir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and captured it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it. 40And Moses ajgave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he settled in it. 41And akJair the son of Manasseh went and captured their villages, and called them Havvoth-jair.
 Havvoth-jair means the villages of Jair
42And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

Deuteronomy 2:24-37

24‘Rise up, set out on your journey and amgo over the Valley of the Arnon. Behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of anHeshbon, and his land. Begin to take possession, and aocontend with him in battle. 25This day I will begin to put apthe dread and fear of you on the peoples who are under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of you and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you.’

The Defeat of King Sihon

26“So I sent messengers from the wilderness of aqKedemoth to Sihon the king of arHeshbon, aswith words of peace, saying, 27 at‘Let me pass through your land. I will go only by the road; I will turn aside neither to the right nor to the left. 28 auYou shall sell me food for money, that I may eat, and give me water for money, that I may drink. Only let me pass through on foot, 29 avas the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I go over the Jordan into the land that the Lord our God is giving to us.’ 30But awSihon the king of axHeshbon would not let us pass by him, for the Lord your God ayhardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might give him into your hand, as he is this day. 31And the Lord said to me, ‘Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to take possession, that you may occupy his land.’ 32Then azSihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz. 33And bathe Lord our God gave him over to us, and bbwe defeated him and his sons and all his people. 34And we captured all his cities at that time and devoted to destruction
That is, set apart ( devoted) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction)
every bdcity, men, women, and children. We left no survivors.
35Only the livestock we took as spoil for ourselves, with the plunder of the cities that we captured. 36 beFrom Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and from bfthe city that is in the valley, as far as Gilead, there was not a city too high for us. bgThe Lord our God gave all into our hands. 37Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not draw near, that is, to all the banks of the river bhJabbok and the cities of the hill country, whatever the Lord our God had forbidden us.

Deuteronomy 3:1-17

The Defeat of King Og

1“Then we turned and went up the way to Bashan. And biOg the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at bjEdrei. 2But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have given him and all his people and his land into your hand. And you shall do to him as you did to bkSihon the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.’ 3So the Lord our God gave into our hand Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people, bland we struck him down until he had no survivor left. 4And we took all his cities at that time—there was not a city that we did not take from them—sixty cities, bmthe whole region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides very many unwalled villages. 6And bnwe devoted them to destruction,
That is, set apart ( devoted) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction); twice in this verse
as we did to Sihon the king of Heshbon, devoting to destruction every bpcity, men, women, and children.
7But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we took as our plunder. 8So we took the land at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the Valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon 9(the Sidonians call bqHermon brSirion, while the Amorites call it bsSenir), 10all the cities of the bttableland and all Gilead and all Bashan, as far as buSalecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 11(For bvonly Og the king of Bashan was left of the remnant of bwthe Rephaim. Behold, his bed was a bed of iron. Is it not in bxRabbah of the Ammonites? Nine cubits
A  cubit was about 18 inches or 45 centimeters
was its length, and four cubits its breadth, according to the bzcommon cubit.
Hebrew cubit of a man
)

12“When we took possession of this land at that time, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory beginning cbat Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead with ccits cities. 13 cdThe rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, that is, ceall the region of Argob, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh. (All that portion of Bashan is called the land of cfRephaim. 14 cgJair the Manassite took all the region of Argob, that is, Bashan, as far as the border of chthe Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called the villages ciafter his own name, Havvoth-jair, as it is to this day.) 15To Machir cjI gave Gilead, 16and to the Reubenites ckand the Gadites I gave the territory from Gilead as far as the Valley of the Arnon, with the middle of the valley as a border, as far over as the river Jabbok, clthe border of the Ammonites; 17the Arabah also, with the Jordan as the border, from cmChinnereth as far as cnthe Sea of the Arabah, cothe Salt Sea, under cpthe slopes of Pisgah on the east.
