bSeir also, his enemies, shall be dispossessed.
Israel is doing valiantly.

Deuteronomy 2:5

5Do not contend with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because cI have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.

Psalms 137:7

7 Remember, O Lord, against the dEdomites
ethe day of Jerusalem,
how they said, f“Lay it bare, lay it bare,
down to its foundations!”

Isaiah 34

Judgment on the Nations

1 Draw near, gO nations, to hear,
and give attention, O peoples!
Let the earth hear, and all that fills it;
the world, and all that comes from it.
2For the Lord is enraged against all the nations,
and furious against all their host;
he has hdevoted them to destruction,
That is, set apart ( devoted) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction); also verse 5
has given them over for slaughter.
3Their slain shall be cast out,
and jthe stench of their corpses shall rise;
kthe mountains shall flow with their blood.
4 lAll the host of heaven shall rot away,
and the skies roll up like a scroll.
All their host shall fall,
as leaves fall from the vine,
like leaves falling from the fig tree.
5 For my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens;
behold, it descends for judgment upon mEdom,
upon the people nI have devoted to destruction.
6The Lord has a sword; it is sated with blood;
it is gorged with fat,
with the blood of lambs and goats,
with the fat of the kidneys of rams.
oFor the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,
a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7 pWild oxen shall qfall with them,
and ryoung steers with sthe mighty bulls.
Their land shall drink its fill of blood,
and their soil shall be gorged with fat.
8 tFor the Lord has a day of vengeance,
a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.
9 uAnd the streams of Edom
Hebrew her streams
shall be turned into pitch,
and her soil into sulfur;
her land shall become burning pitch.
10Night and day wit shall not be quenched;
xits smoke shall go up forever.
yFrom generation to generation it shall lie waste;
none shall pass through it forever and ever.
11 zBut the hawk and the porcupine
The identity of the animals rendered  hawk and  porcupine is uncertain
shall possess it,
the owl and the raven shall dwell in it.
abHe shall stretch the line of acconfusion
Hebrew formlessness
over it,
and the plumb line of emptiness.
12Its nobles—there is no one there to call it a kingdom,
and all its princes shall be nothing.
13 aeThorns shall grow over its strongholds,
nettles and thistles in its fortresses.
It shall be the haunt of afjackals,
an abode for ostriches.
Or owls

14 ahAnd wild animals shall meet with hyenas;
the wild goat shall cry to his fellow;
indeed, there the night bird
Identity uncertain
settles
and finds for herself a resting place.
15 There the owl nests and lays
and hatches and gathers her young in her shadow;
indeed, there ajthe hawks are gathered,
each one with her mate.
16Seek and read from the book of the Lord:
Not one of these shall be missing;
none shall be without her mate.
For the mouth of the Lord has commanded,
and his Spirit has gathered them.
17 akHe has cast the lot for them;
his hand has portioned it out to them with the line;
they shall possess it forever;
from generation to generation they shall dwell in it.

Isaiah 63:1-6

The Lord’s Day of Vengeance

1 Who is this who comes from alEdom,
in crimsoned garments from amBozrah,
he who is splendid in his apparel,
anmarching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
mighty to save.”
2 Why is your aoapparel red,
and your garments like his apwho treads in the winepress?
3 aq“I have trodden the winepress alone,
arand from the peoples no one was with me;
I trod them in my anger
and trampled them in my wrath;
their lifeblood
Or  their juice; also verse 6
spattered on my garments,
and stained all my apparel.
4 atFor the day of vengeance was in my heart,
and my year of redemption
Or the year of my redeemed
had come.
5I looked, but avthere was no one to help;
I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold;
so my own arm brought me salvation,
and my wrath upheld me.
6I trampled down the peoples in my anger;
awI made them drunk in my wrath,
and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

Jeremiah 49:7-22

Judgment on Edom

7Concerning axEdom.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:

ay“Is wisdom no more in azTeman?
baHas counsel perished from the prudent?
bbHas their wisdom vanished?
8 bcFlee, turn back, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of bdDedan!
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
bethe time when I punish him.
9 bfIf grape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave bggleanings?
bhIf thieves came by night,
would they not destroy only enough for themselves?
10 biBut I have stripped Esau bare;
bjI have uncovered his hiding places,
and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,
and his neighbors; and bkhe is no more.
11 blLeave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive;
bmand let your widows trust in me.”
12For thus says the Lord: bnIf those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, bowill you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. 13 bpFor I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that bqBozrah shall become bra horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”

14 bsI have heard a message from the Lord,
and an envoy has been sent among the nations:
bt“Gather yourselves together and come against her,
and rise up for battle!
15For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
despised among mankind.
16The horror you inspire has deceived you,
and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,
Or  of Sela

who hold the height of the hill.
Though you bvmake your nest as high as the eagle’s,
I will bring you down from there,

declares the Lord.
17 bwEdom shall become a horror. bxEveryone who passes by it will be horrified byand will hiss because of all its disasters. 18 bzAs when Sodom and Gomorrah and their caneighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, cbno man shall dwell there, ccno man shall sojourn in her. 19 cdBehold, celike a lion coming up from cfthe jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him
Septuagint, Syriac them
run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. chFor who is like me? ciWho will summon me? cjWhat shepherd can stand before me?
20Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against ckEdom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of clTeman: cmEven the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 21At the sound of their fall cnthe earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. 22Behold, coone shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against cpBozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart cqof a woman in her birth pains.”
