33And aMoses gave to them, to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land and its cities with their territories, the cities of the land throughout the country. 34And the people of Gad built bDibon, cAtaroth, dAroer, 35Atroth-shophan, eJazer, Jogbehah, 36 fBeth-nimrah and Beth-haran, gfortified cities, and folds for sheep. 37And the people of Reuben built hHeshbon, iElealeh, Kiriathaim, 38 jNebo, and kBaal-meon ( ltheir names were changed), and mSibmah. And they gave other names to the cities that they built. 39And the sons of nMachir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and captured it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it. 40And Moses ogave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he settled in it. 41And pJair the son of Manasseh went and captured their villages, and called them Havvoth-jair.
Havvoth-jair means the villages of Jair
42And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

Deuteronomy 3:12-16

12“When we took possession of this land at that time, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory beginning rat Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead with sits cities. 13 tThe rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, that is, uall the region of Argob, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh. (All that portion of Bashan is called the land of vRephaim. 14 wJair the Manassite took all the region of Argob, that is, Bashan, as far as the border of xthe Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called the villages yafter his own name, Havvoth-jair, as it is to this day.) 15To Machir zI gave Gilead, 16and to the Reubenites aaand the Gadites I gave the territory from Gilead as far as the Valley of the Arnon, with the middle of the valley as a border, as far over as the river Jabbok, abthe border of the Ammonites;

Joshua 13:7-32

7Now therefore acdivide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

The Inheritance East of the Jordan

8With the other half of the tribe of Manasseh
Hebrew  With it
the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, aewhich Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord gave them:
9 affrom Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and agall the tableland of Medeba as far as Dibon; 10 ahand all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the boundary of the Ammonites; 11and Gilead, and the airegion of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and ajall Bashan to Salecah; 12 akall the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (he alone was left of althe remnant of the Rephaim); amthese Moses had struck and driven out. 13 anYet the people of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites, but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel to this day.

14 aoTo the tribe of Levi alone Moses gave no inheritance. The offerings by fire to the Lord God of Israel are their inheritance, as he said to him.

15And Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the people of Reuben according to their clans. 16So their territory was from Aroer, apwhich is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland by aqMedeba; 17with Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the tableland; arDibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon, 18 asand Jahaz, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath, 19and atKiriathaim, and auSibmah, and Zereth-shahar on the hill of the valley, 20and avBeth-peor, and awthe slopes of Pisgah, and axBeth-jeshimoth, 21that is, ayall the cities of the tableland, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, azwhom Moses defeated with bathe leaders of Midian, Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land. 22 bbBalaam also, the son of Beor, the one who practiced divination, was killed with the sword by the people of Israel among the rest of their slain. 23And the border of the people of Reuben was the Jordan as a boundary. This was the inheritance of the people of Reuben, according to their clans with their cities and villages.

24Moses gave an inheritance also to the tribe of Gad, to the people of Gad, according to their clans. 25 bcTheir territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites, to Aroer, which is east of bdRabbah, 26and from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from beMahanaim to the territory of Debir,
Septuagint, Syriac, Vulgate; Hebrew Lidebir
27and in the valley Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, bgSuccoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, having the Jordan as a boundary, to the lower end of the Sea of bhChinnereth, eastward beyond the Jordan. 28This is the inheritance of the people of Gad according to their clans, with their cities and villages.

29And Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh. It was allotted to the half-tribe of the people of Manasseh according to their clans. 30Their region extended from biMahanaim, through all Bashan, the whole kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all bjthe towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities, 31and half Gilead, and bkAshtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. These were allotted to the people of blMachir the son of Manasseh for the half of the people of Machir according to their clans.

32These are the inheritances that Moses distributed bmin the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan east of Jericho.

Joshua 14:3

3 bnFor Moses had given an inheritance to the two and one-half tribes beyond the Jordan, bobut to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them.

Joshua 22:1-10

The Eastern Tribes Return Home

1At that time Joshua summoned the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, 2and said to them, “You have kept bpall that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you bqand have obeyed my voice in all that I have commanded you. 3You have not forsaken your brothers these many days, down to this day, but have been careful to keep the charge of the Lord your God. 4 brAnd now the Lord your God has given rest to your brothers, as he promised them. Therefore turn and go to your tents in the land where your possession lies, bswhich Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan. 5 btOnly be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, buto love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments and to cling to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.” 6So Joshua bvblessed them and sent them away, and they went to their tents.

7Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan, bwbut to the other half Joshua had given a possession beside their brothers in the land west of the Jordan. And when Joshua sent them away to their homes and blessed them, 8he said to them, “Go back to your tents with much wealth and with very much livestock, with silver, gold, bronze, and iron, and with much clothing. bxDivide the spoil of your enemies with your brothers.” 9So the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned home, parting from the people of Israel at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go byto the land of Gilead, their own land of which they had possessed themselves by command of the Lord through Moses.

The Eastern Tribes’ Altar of Witness

10And when they came to the region of the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, an altar of imposing size.

Descendants of Reuben

1The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel ( bzfor he was the firstborn, but because cahe defiled his father’s couch, cbhis birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel, so that he could not be enrolled as the oldest son; 2 ccthough Judah became strong among his brothers and a cdchief came from him, yet the birthright belonged to Joseph), 3the cesons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. 4The sons of Joel: Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, Shimei his son, 5Micah his son, Reaiah his son, Baal his son, 6Beerah his son, whom cfTiglath-pileser

7And his kinsmen by their clans, chwhen the genealogy of their generations was recorded: the chief, Jeiel, and Zechariah, 8and Bela the son of Azaz, son of ciShema, son of Joel, who lived in cjAroer, as far as ckNebo and clBaal-meon. 9He also lived to the east as far as the entrance of the desert this side of the Euphrates, because their livestock had multiplied cmin the land of Gilead. 10And in the days of Saul they waged war against the cnHagrites, who fell into their hand. And they lived in their tents throughout all the region east of Gilead.
