Numbers 33:52-55

52 then ^ayou shall drive out ^ball the inhabitants of the land from before you and destroy all their ^cfigured stones and destroy all their metal images and demolish all their high places. 53 And you shall take possession of the land and settle in it, for I have given the land to you to possess it. 54 ^dYou shall inherit the land by lot according to your clans. ^eTo a large tribe you shall give a large inheritance, and to a small tribe you shall give a small inheritance. Wherever the lot falls for anyone, that shall be his. According to the tribes of your fathers you shall inherit. 55 But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then those of them whom you let remain shall be as ^fbarbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides, and they shall trouble you in the land where you dwell.

A Chosen People

1 “When the ^gLord your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it, and clears away many nations before you, ^hthe Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations ⁱmore numerous and mightier than you, 2 ^jand when the Lord your God gives them over to you, and you defeat them, then you must ^kdevote them to complete destruction. ^{▼▼That is, set apart ( devote) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction)} ^mYou shall make no covenant with them and show no mercy to them.
