38 dAnd in his teaching he said, Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like greetings in the marketplaces 39and have the best seats in the synagogues and ethe places of honor at feasts,

Luke 11:43-54

43Woe to you Pharisees! For fyou love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44Woe to you! gFor you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”

45One of hthe lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.” 46And he said, Woe to you ilawyers also! For jyou load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 kWoe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. 48 lSo you are witnesses and you mconsent to the deeds of nyour fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs. 49Therefore also othe Wisdom of God said, p‘I will send them qprophets and apostles, rsome of whom they will skill and persecute,’ 50so that tthe blood of all the prophets, shed ufrom the foundation of the world, may be vcharged against this generation, 51from the blood of wAbel to the blood of xZechariah, who perished between ythe altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be zrequired of this generation. 52Woe to you aalawyers! abFor you have taken away the key of acknowledge. You addid not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”

53As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, 54 aelying in wait for him, afto catch him in something he might say.

Luke 14:7-11

The Parable of the Wedding Feast

7Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed aghow they chose the places of honor, saying to them, 8When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, 9and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, ahso that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. 11For aieveryone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Luke 20:46-47

46Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and ajthe places of honor at feasts, 47 akwho devour widowshouses and alfor a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
