Proverbs 30:8-9

8Remove far from me falsehood and lying;
give me neither poverty nor riches;
feed me with the food that is aneedful for me,
9lest I be bfull and cdeny you
and say, dWho is the Lord?”
or lest I be poor and steal
eand profane the name of my God.

23And Jesus flooked around and said to his disciples, gHow difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter hthe kingdom of God!”

Luke 12:15-21

15And he said to them, i“Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16And he told them a parable, saying, j“The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17and he thought to himself, kWhat shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my lbarns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up mfor many years; relax, neat, drink, be merry.”’ 20But God said to him, oFool! pThis night qyour soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, rwhose will they be?’ 21So is the one swho lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

Luke 16:13-14

13 tNo servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19There was a rich man who was clothed in xpurple and fine linen and ywho feasted sumptuously every day. 20And at his gate zwas laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21who desired to be fed with aawhat fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22The poor man died and was carried by abthe angels acto Abraham’s side.

The rich man also died and was buried,
23and in aeHades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and afsaw Abraham far off and Lazarus agat his side. 24And he called out, ahFather Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and aicool my tongue, for ajI am in anguish in this flame.’ 25But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that akyou in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ 27And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house 28for I have five brothers

—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’

Luke 18:24

24Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, amHow difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter anthe kingdom of God!
