Psalms 1

The Way of the Righteous and the Wicked

1 Blessed is the man
The singular Hebrew word for  man (ish) is used here to portray a representative example of a godly person; see Preface

who bwalks not in cthe counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in dthe way of sinners,
nor esits in fthe seat of gscoffers;
2but his hdelight is in the law
Or instruction
of the Lord,
and on his jlaw he meditates day and night.
3 He is like ka tree
planted by lstreams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its mleaf does not wither.
nIn all that he does, he prospers.
4The wicked are not so,
but are like ochaff that the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked pwill not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in qthe congregation of the righteous;
6for the Lord rknows sthe way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

Psalms 106

Give Thanks to the Lord, for He Is Good

1 tPraise the Lord!
uOh give thanks to the Lord, vfor he is good,
wfor his steadfast love endures forever!
2Who can utter the mighty deeds of the Lord,
or declare all his praise?
3Blessed are they who observe justice,
who xdo righteousness at all times!
4 yRemember me, O Lord, when you show favor to your people;
help me when you save them,
Or  Remember me, O Lord, with the favor you show to your people; help me with your salvation

5that I may look upon the prosperity of your aachosen ones,
that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation,
that I may glory with your inheritance.
6 abBoth we and acour fathers have sinned;
we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness.
7Our fathers, when they were in Egypt,
did not consider your wondrous works;
they addid not remember the abundance of your steadfast love,
but aerebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.
8Yet he saved them affor his name’s sake,
agthat he might make known his mighty power.
9He ahrebuked the Red Sea, and it aibecame dry,
and he ajled them through the deep as through a desert.
10So he aksaved them from the hand of the foe
and alredeemed them from the power of the enemy.
11And amthe waters covered their adversaries;
not one of them was left.
12Then anthey believed his words;
they aosang his praise.
13 But they soon apforgot his works;
they did not wait for aqhis counsel.
14But they had ara wanton craving in the wilderness,
and asput God to the test in the desert;
15he atgave them what they asked,
but sent aua wasting disease among them.
16 When men in the camp avwere jealous of Moses
and Aaron, awthe holy one of the Lord,
17 axthe earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,
and covered the company of Abiram.
18 ayFire also broke out in their company;
the flame burned up the wicked.
19 They azmade a calf in Horeb
and worshiped a metal image.
20They baexchanged the glory of God
Hebrew  exchanged their glory

for the image of an ox that eats grass.
21They bcforgot God, their Savior,
who had done great things in Egypt,
22wondrous works in bdthe land of Ham,
and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.
23Therefore behe said he would destroy them—
had not Moses, his bfchosen one,
bgstood in the breach before him,
to turn away his wrath from destroying them.
24 Then they bhdespised bithe pleasant land,
having bjno faith in his promise.
25They bkmurmured in their tents,
and did not obey the voice of the Lord.
26Therefore he blraised his hand and swore to them
that he would make them fall in the wilderness,
27and would make their offspring fall among the nations,
bmscattering them among the lands.
28 Then they bnyoked themselves to the boBaal of Peor,
and ate sacrifices offered to bpthe dead;
29they provoked the Lord to anger with their deeds,
and a plague broke out among them.
30Then bqPhinehas stood up and intervened,
and the plague was stayed.
31And that was brcounted to him as righteousness
from generation to generation forever.
32 They bsangered him at the waters of Meribah,
and it went ill with Moses on their account,
33for they btmade his spirit bitter,
Or  they rebelled against God’s Spirit

and he bvspoke rashly with his lips.
34 They did not bwdestroy the peoples,
bxas the Lord commanded them,
35but they bymixed with the nations
and learned to do as they did.
36They served their idols,
which became bza snare to them.
37They casacrificed their sons
and their daughters to cbthe demons;
38they poured out innocent blood,
the blood of their sons and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,
and the land was ccpolluted with blood.
39Thus they cdbecame unclean by their acts,
and ceplayed the whore in their deeds.
40 Then cfthe anger of the Lord was kindled against cghis people,
and he abhorred his chheritage;
41he cigave them into the hand of the nations,
so that those who hated them ruled over them.
42Their enemies cjoppressed them,
and they were brought into subjection under their power.
43 ckMany times he delivered them,
but they were rebellious in their clpurposes
and were cmbrought low through their iniquity.
44 Nevertheless, he looked upon their distress,
when he cnheard their cry.
45For their sake he coremembered his covenant,
and cprelented according to cqthe abundance of his steadfast love.
46He caused them to be crpitied
by all those who held them captive.
47 csSave us, O Lord our God,
and ctgather us from among the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name
and glory in your praise.
48 cuBlessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting!
cvAnd let all the people say, “Amen!”
cwPraise the Lord!
